About the Item

The painting (oil on canvas 97 x 63 cm, with gilded wooden frame 104 x 71 cm) depicts one of the most dramatic and salient moments in the Christian Catholic religion, namely the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The scene is dominated in the center by the figure of the son of God with a glowing white body, according to the iconography of the "Christus patiens" with his eyes closed, and features four nails, two in his hands and two in his feet, according to an older iconography and departing slightly from the three-nail iconography that would become the most common from the Middle Ages onward. Standing at his sides are the two mourners, namely his mother the Virgin Mary and the Evangelist John. The cross is set in a rocky setting, recalling Golgotha. The pain is expressed in a very reserved and gentle manner, both in postures and expressions, even the blood gushing from the nails is barely noticeable, almost blending in with the muscles and tendons of the forearm For pictorial and stylistic reasons the work is attributable to the 19th century, probably from the Academic field of study, and the culture of the central Italian area can be proposed. Given the obvious references to antiquity, particularly the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, the artist may fit into the Purist or Pre-Raphaelite current.

Oil painting on canvas. It is a vintage copy of the engraving of the same name made by Annibale Carracci (1560-1609), which had immediate success and gave rise to a series of printed replicas and painted copies. It presents the moment of the Passion in which Christ is crowned with the crown of thorns, the object of torture, the disparaging symbol of his proclamation as King of Kings. The act is performed by two figures, the Roman soldier and the Jew, representing the two people who they took part in Christ's death sentence. The figures, vigorous and sanguine, those of the two tormentors paler and more inert than the victim, create an intertwined composition of bodies, with that of the central Jesus joining the other two, uniting them in the shared responsibility of what they are doing; placed sideways, Jesus has his head bent forcibly to the left by the soldier who imposes the crown of thorns on him, while the Jew on the right places the bamboo cane in his hand, replacing the scepter. The scene is dominated by gloomy and dark colors, among which only the bright red of Christ's robe stands...
