About the Item
Antique oil on canvas painting depicting Madonna and Child with gilded and carved wooden frame.
Mary is depicted according to classical iconography, holding Jesus in her arms.
Jesus and Our Lady both placed in the foreground,hold a lily:
In his Vallis Liliorum, the German mystic Thomas of Kempis quotes the Song of Songs: "I am the flower and the lily of the valleys"; "This is the word with which Christ turns to his holy Church in general, and more especially to each pitiful soul. For Christ is the beautiful bridegroom of the Catholic Church [...], the flower of all virtues, the lily of the valleys. [...] whoever therefore wishes to serve Christ and please the heavenly bridegroom, let him endeavor to strip himself of his vices, to gather the lilies of virtue."
Jacopone da Todi, in Il Pianto della Madonna de la passione del figliolo Jesù Cristo, has Mary say, "O figlio, figlio, figlio! / Son, amoroso liglio, / figlio, chi da consiglio / al cor mio angustiato?"
"If the combination of roses and lilies in religious depictions often emphasizes precisely the mystical bond between Mother and Son," writes Piccolo Paci, "where the presence of the iris is emphasized, perhaps associated with another flower, such as columbine for example, it is intended to highlight the sovereignty and painful and necessary destiny of the Savior."
Giving depth to the entire composition is the open window behind the figures.
Indeed, the splendid workmanship and refined coloring, evidently of the highest level, suggest attribution to a highly talented author working in Lombardy in the second half of the 18th century.
