La grande scena racconta la storia tragica di Apollo e Dafne, raccontata nelle Metamorfosi di Ovidio. Secondo il mito il dio Apollo, avendo schernito Cupido, viene da lui colpito con una freccia d'amore che lo fa innamorare della ninfa Dafne, colpita invece d auna freccia di piombo, capace di far finire l'amore. Apollo colpito dalla freccia si innamora perdutamente di Dafne e corre verso di lei, ma la ninfa respinge il dio e scappa.
Per evitare di essere presa Dafne chiede al padre Peneo, divinità eponime del fiume Peneo, di essere trasformata per non doversi sottomettere ad Apollo. Peneo ascolta la sua richiesta e quando Apollo sta per afferrarla, Dafne si trasforma in un albero di alloro, pianta che da quel momento diventa sacra al dio.
L'opera presenta in alcune parti vicinanze ai modi pittorici di Giuseppe Zocchi (1711 -1767), a cui l'autore ha probabilmente guardato in particolare nella rappresentazione degli alberi e della vegetazione.
La tela presenta diverse cadute di colore, soprattutto in basso a sinistra, ed una serie di fori (di dimensioni diverse lungo i bordi e al centro) causati da precedenti chiodi messi a rinforzo.
