La scena è dominata dalla croce, sulla quale risalta il corpo ben modellato e dal colore bianco brillanto di Cristo, dipinta con una prospettiva laterale.
La parte sinistra è occupata dalla Vergine Maria, immortalata nell'atto di svenire sorretta dalle Due Marie, mentre san Giovanni alza le braccia al cielo in un gesto di intenso dolore. La destra, invece, vede Maria Maddalena con il vaso con gli unguenti in alabastro inginocchiarsi ai piedi del figlio di Dio. Sullo sfondo, si riconosce il profilo della città di Gerusalemme.
Il dipinto (le cui dimensioni senza la cornice sono 75 x 62 cm) può essere ascritto alla scuola napoletana del XVIII secolo per profonde somiglianze con l'arte di quella zona. Nello specifico, può essere associato alla mano di Giacinto Diano (1731- 1803) per l'uso della palette delicata e dalle tonalità pastello, per l'evidente ma nello stesso momento composto modo di esprimere il pathos (la posa della vergine ricorda quella di Giuditta nel "Giuditta e Oloferne" in collezione privata), nella sottile ma ben definita muscolatura du Gesù (che può essere confrontata con quella del San Sebastiano del Museo di Indianapolis), nei profili affilati con nasi lunghi e nelle fisionomie caratterizzare da volti ovali con occhi grandi e tondi.

The painting (with a Salvador Rosa-style gilded frame 88 x 116 cm) depicts a group of four children who are playing outside on a swinging seesaw; we are probably dealing with a prank, as can be seen by the satisfied expression of the child on the right at the expense of the one in the foreground, who seems to be supported by the others, perhaps because of the fear felt.

The present painting is a very interesting testimony of the creative process of Matteo Bonechi, one of the leading artists on the Tuscan art scene in the early 18th century. The canvas in question is in fact the last preparatory model made by Bonechi before he executed an altarpiece for the church of San Filippo Neri in Cortona in 1716.
