About the Item

Oil on Canvas. Italian school of the seventeenth century. The Old Testament episode of Lot and his daughters has been widely the subject of pictorial representation, albeit depicting different moments of the story. In this case the man and the two girls are depicted in the moment of their escape from Sodom, a city that God destroys to punish the depravity of its inhabitants; because of his righteousness, Lot is warned by an angel to flee with his family. The three figures are depicted in the foreground, half-length, with the father looking ahead urging his daughters to do the same, lest they incur the divine punishment that has already struck his wife, turned into a statue of salt for disobeying the 'divine exhortation not to look back. The canvas, previously retinted, currently has several color falls, in need of restoration. It is presented in wooden frame from the early 1900s. It has no signature of the artist.
