The Flight into Egypt 1620 Flemish Baroque Old Master Oil Painting on Copper The Flight into Egypt, Flemish Baroque Old Master Oil on Copper, c. 1620. Entourage de Jacob Jordaens Presumably developed in Italy, the technique of painting on copper dates to the early 1500s. Between 1575 and 1650, copper paintings flourished in northern and southern Europe, the likely result of an increase in printmaking on copper plates. Among their advantages, copper sheets offered a fine, non-absorbent surface and required little preparation. They also tolerated variances in climate better than other materials. And unlike paintings on panel or canvas, those on copper did not suffer damage caused by linings or transfers. The metal’s natural smoothness concealed brushstrokes and imparted an enamel-like brilliance, as seen here in today’s painting, The Flight into Egypt. The theme of The Flight into Egypt has been frequently rendered by artists over the years. Of course, by Rubens, Caravaggio, El Greco, Jacob Jordaens, Fra Bartolomeo, Gentile da Fabriano, Adam Elsheimer, and many others. Even the famed Lucas Cranach the Elder portrayed the subject in 1504. Please closely inspect The Flight into Egypt. It is contemporary with the painting rendered by Jacob Jordaens in ”Return of the Holy Family from Egypt.” The brushwork, subject and atmosphere of the painting, as both today’s painting and that of Jacob Jordaens are emblematic of the Flemish Baroque School. Flemish Baroque painting refers to the art produced in the Southern Netherlands during Spanish control in the 16th and 17th centuries. The period roughly begins in 1585 and lasted until about 1700. Antwerp, home to the prominent artists Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and Jacob Jordaens, was the artistic nexus of the Flemish Baroque period. During the 15th century - the early days of the Italian Renaissance - Flemish painters had exported the technique of oil painting to artists in Florence, Rome and Venice. At the beginning of the 17th century, with the spread of Italian Caravaggism, Flemish painters combined their own tradition with the tenebrist tradition arriving from Italy. This development was exemplified by the Antwerp artist Rubens. Since the High Renaissance, Flemish painting had been in transition between Northern and Italian influences; it was Peter Paul Rubens who made the first real attempt to digest, absorb and fuse the two schools, creating a new style, well-suited to the more devout religious paintings called for by the Council of Trent's guidelines, which had a powerful impact on all painting north of the Alps, as seen here in The Flight into Egypt. Flemish art is notable for the large amount of collaboration that took place between independent masters, as seen here in our subject painting, "The Flight into Egypt," Entourage de Jacob Jordaens. I have as yet been unable to locate a signature on "The Flight into Egypt." Hence, I offer The Flight into Egypt" as "Entourage de (follower of) Jacob Jordaens.” Adam Elsheimer, a very influential Baroque painter of the 1600’s rendered the same subject with the Holy Family traveling by night, also on copper, as is the case here in our subject, The Flight into Egypt. Soon after the visit by the Magi, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream telling him to flee to Egypt with Mary and the infant Jesus since King Herod would seek the child to kill him. Joseph received a message from God that Mary's son was in danger. He swiftly responded, taking his little family to the safe haven of Egypt - reversing the Exodus story of the Hebrew flight from the Egyptian Pharaoh. Egypt was a logical place to find refuge, as it was outside the dominions of King Herod, but both Egypt and Israel were part of the Roman Empire, linked by a coastal road known as "the way of the sea" making travel between them easy and relatively safe. The term “Old Master” is commonly accepted usage referring to a European painter or artist who worked before the year 1800. In other words, paintings of the 19th century would be considered “too recent” to be included in this category. Neither John Constable nor Eugène Delacroix would be classified as Old Masters. The list of recognized Old Masters is rather long, and includes such names as: Pieter Bruegel the Elder; El Greco); David Teniers the Younger; Meindert Hobbema; Caravaggio; Rembrandt van Rijn; Nicolas Poussin; Johannes Vermeer; Joshua Reynolds; Jacob Jordaens, and numerous others. The works of the Old Masters are, of course, increasingly difficult to find and have enjoyed a correspondingly steady rise in prices. Nevertheless, they represent a much more sound investment than the fluctuations of today's financial markets. One could sleep much more soundly with an Old Master painting on the wall than a rapidly-declining stock market portfolio. The paintings of the Old Masters represent a much more secure investment, esthetically as well as financially, than the vagaries of today's stock market. "The Flight into Egypt" is truly a magnificent Flemish Baroque Old Master oil painting on copper, and is offered at an extremely modest price for a work of this great age, beauty and quality. "The Flight into Egypt" measures 14 inches x 11 3/4 inches in original antique gilt frame frame, and 8 3/4 inches x 6 3/4 inches unframed.
