An utterly charming mid-century oil, painted in the manner of Polish artist Henryk Gotlib (1890 -1966). The scene captures several colourful sailing boats departing a grand city harbour. The artist's impasto style beautifully emphasis the naive nature of the composition. Signed to the lower right. Signed and dated to the reverse. On hessian on stretchers.

The scene shows the Virgin Mary, cradling her son in a forest glade on their journey into Egypt. Several putti gather overhead and a blackbird and white rabbit (symbolising both Mary's virginity and fertility) can be seen at the lower left.Â
