Last chance clearance sale. Northern Spanish painting of Saint Francis, 16th century. The hands painted in a Greek or Byzantine icon style, and the fine precision of the early Netherlandish masters is evident in the fine detailing such as the individual hairs of Saint Francis’ forehead, the tears, the engorged veins on his head and hands, as well as the black background. Oil on wood panel. 17 1/2 x 13 1/4 inches. Faux tortoise shell frame measures 22 1/2 x 18 1/4 x 1 1/4 inches. Provenance: Private collection, Vienna, Austria to 1980. Sold at the Dorotheum, Vienna, 1980. Estate of Jonathan Cobb, San Francisco, CA. Condition: Excellent; professional cleaning and conservation to thin vertical crack in panel, which long ago was strengthened by four wood braces. Tiny area of in-painting upper left. 1-inch surface scratch left of center. Most likely this was part of a triptych, or a side panel from a larger altarpiece. Compare the nearly identical posture and position of the head and hands to the Saint Francis attributed to Morales in the Museum of Western and Oriental Art in Kiev (as of 2020 this painting is no longer even attributed to Morales). However, the head of Christ on the cross in this painting echoes those of Morales. The wrinkles, expression of the eyes, and the bony hands are not typical of Morales. During one of the most intense periods of the powerful Spanish Inquisition (ca. 1500-1575) Spanish artists were required by the tribunal to depict religious figures with extreme emotion.
