Il dipinto, di buona qualità, è una replica dell' opera realizzata nel 1856 da Hébert ed esposta nel 1859 al Salon Carré e poi ancora nel 1867 all' Esposition International de Champ de Mars. ed attualmente esposta al Muséè d' Orsay.
Il dipinto raffigura tre generazioni di donne, simbolo delle tre età della vita: la fanciullezza, la giovinezza, la vecchiaia attraverso la raffigurazione di una bambina e due donne che vanno ad attingere l'acqua, passando sotto un arco.
Hébert visse alcuni anni a Cervara - antico borgo laziale in provincia di Roma, famoso per le figure scolpite nella roccia-, e nella sua produzione di soggetti popolari raffigurò la vita e lo spirito degli abitanti del paesino, nella quotidianità delle azioni e nelle emozioni dei sentimenti.
