About the Item
Oil on Canvas.
The 'work is an unsigned replica of one executed by Pierre Mignard and given to Louis XIV, preserved today in the Louvre Museum in Paris.
The dramatic scene is set just outside the walls of Jerusalem; a procession of people accompanies Jesus on his ascent to Calvary, which can be glimpsed in the background on the right, with already the crosses of the two thieves erected.
Instead, the Cross of Christ is carried by Simon the Cyrenian, obliged by the guards after Jesus' umpteenth fall, who is roughly urged with a scourge to get up.
In front of Christ walk bound the two thieves, accompanied by some servants; on the left is the group of pious women accompanying and supporting Mary, who is grief-stricken.
Opposed to this group is on the right another group of women of the people, who watch in an attitude of pitiful compassion, averting their little children's eyes from the terrible spectacle.
The background landscape is rugged and barren, under a sky that is loading up with gray, gloomy clouds.
The work was restored and re-televised in the mid 1900s. and mounted on a new frame.

The present painting is a very interesting testimony of the creative process of Matteo Bonechi, one of the leading artists on the Tuscan art scene in the early 18th century.
