About the Item

Oil on Canvas. It is a copy of the 'painting of the same name by Giulio Cesare Ferrari (1818-1899) made in 1863 and purchased a few years later by the Pinacoteca dell' Accademia di Bologna. The painting depicts a scene from Victor Hugo's novel "Notre-Dame de Paris": Esmeralda, young gypsy girl who enchants with her beauty and dancing, is pursued by Archdeacon Frollo because of her obsession, and is locked up by him in the tower of the Paris Cathedral, where, however, she is helped by the hunchbacked bell ringer Quasimodo. In the scene, the young woman is huddled in the cramped, dark cell in the company of her inseparable baby goat. The work belongs to the historical-literary pictorial current that developed in the 19th century parallel to Romanticism and Realism, and is characterized by the depiction of scenes from history and literature, often with celebratory and commemorative intent. The copy offered here, of good hand and dated shortly after the original, is presented in a mid-20th-century style frame, coeval with the restoration and re-framing of the 'work.
