About the Item
Oil on Canvas. Spanish school of the late 18th century.
It recounts the biblical episode told in the book of Exodus in which baby Moses, in order to escape the slaughter of the children of Israel ordered by Pharaoh, is left by his mother in a basket on the banks of the Nile, where Pharaoh's daughter went to bathe. It, upon finding him, decided to rescue him and then raised him as a son in its court.
The 'episode has been widely used as a pictorial subject because of the suggestive nature of the theme:
the character-filled scene has at its center the princess daughter of the Pharaoh of Egypt, surrounded by her entire retinue, who looks on and welcomes with the gesture of her outstretched hand the baby Moses, who tolot from the basket at her left, stretching out hungrily toward the breast of the woman behind her, the wet nurse ready to nurse him.
The scene is set in a Nordic landscape contemporary with the painting, just as the figures wear 18th-century clothing, except for the princess who sports an oriental-style diademed headdress.
Her figure stands out because of the bright color of her dress, just as the nude child's rosy complexion stands out against the duller, darker colors of the women in the retinue.
The painting has been restored and re-tinted.
