"Penitent Mary Magdalene."

Dimensions: 97 x 76 cm; 76 x 57 cm (frame).
The figure of Mary Magdalene appears in a red tunic, symbol of passion and sin, slipped in such a way that one breast is exposed: a common device in Baroque iconography to unite sensuality with repentance. Her long, wavy hair falls over her shoulders, reinforcing the idea of the earthly but also of penance (for according to tradition, she used it to cover her nakedness). The idealized face, with soft and expressive features, corresponds to the aesthetic canon of the period, which sought to convey an ideal of spiritualized beauty through physical form. The use of chiaroscuro emphasizes the dramatic tension: the body emerges in warm light against a dark background, highlighting the figure in an atmosphere of contemplation. In one corner, a skull (memento mori, symbol of the transience of life) and symbols of the Passion are included, linking the saint’s repentance to Christ’s redemption.
The Penitent Mary Magdalene was a recurring iconographic theme in Christian art, but it was during the Baroque period that the figure of Magdalene gained great popularity in European painting, particularly during the Counter-Reformation.
