About the Item

J.Strebele oil on canvas signed lower left 110 x 98 cm The raising of Lazarus is one of the best-known and most significant miracle stories in the New Testament. Source: It is recounted exclusively in the Gospel of John, chapter 11 (John 11:1–44). Actors: Jesus raises his friend Lazarus from the dead in the town of Bethany near Jerusalem. Lazarus is the brother of Mary and Martha. Background: Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days when Jesus arrived. Martha pointed out to Jesus that the body already smelled. Jesus had the stone rolled away from the tomb and cried out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" (John 11:43). Then Lazarus emerged from the tomb, still wrapped in linen cloths. Meaning: It is the last and greatest of the seven signs of Jesus in the Gospel of John and demonstrates his power over death. The story symbolizes the victory of life over death and serves as a foreshadowing of the resurrection of Jesus himself and the resurrection of the dead on the Last Day. In his conversation with Martha, Jesus utters a central tenet of his faith: "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, will live; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die." (John 11:25–26). The resurrection of Lazarus leads many present to believe in Jesus, but at the same time, it is the reason why the chief priests and Pharisees finally decide to kill Jesus (John 11:47–53).
