About the Item

Italian Antique Oil Painting On Canvas With Biblical Scene With Characters And Architecture From the 1800s from the horizontal format depicts the scene of Susanna and the Old Testament Old Men, which among the Old Testament episodes is one of the most frequently depicted, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries. The story is well known: Susanna is a legendary heroine whose innocence triumphed over the perverse wickedness of some men. The story takes place in Babylon during exile. Susanna, the wife of a wealthy Jew, was the object of desire of two elders in the community who together devised a plot to seduce her. She used to take her bath in the garden, and there the two men ambushed her: when the handmaids had gone, leaving her alone, they leapt out of their hiding place and, surprising her naked, threatened that if she did not give herself to them they would swear publicly that they had caught her in the act of adultery with a young man, a guilt that was punishable by death. But Susanna dismissed them with disdain and cried out for help. The two irate old men, put their threat into action: Susanna was brought before the court under false accusation, found guilty and sentenced to death. But in the eleventh hour young Daniel came forward and questioned the two men separately and obtained contradictory testimony from them, thus proving Susanna's innocence. The depiction of Susanna caught naked by old men ostensibly has moralistic intentions, but it is often a pretext to satisfy the "prudery" of patrons who delight in female nude subjects. The present painting depicts Susanna at the margins sitting on the baluster of a fountain decorated with equestrian sculptures, characters and zoomorphic elements. In front of her a small dog watches the advent of the two old men. In the background is the vegetation of a fenced courtyard beyond which monumental scenery can be glimpsed. The painting is unframed, anonymous, unsigned, comes from a private collection in Lombardy, is been lined and has old restorations, visible in the photo gallery, as well as paint stains on the lower left side.
