About the Item
"The New Church and Old Houses in the Hague" is an oil on canvas on cardboard painting made by Vincent van Gogh, c. 1883. The painting size is 13 5/8 x 9 3/4 inches. The framed size is 24 3/8 x 20 3/4 x 3 inches.
The New Church and Old Houses in the Hague dramatically demonstrates the young van Gogh’s interest in the interplay of light and shadow as he adeptly captures an atmospheric cityscape.
This painting was created at the end of van Gogh’s two-year period in the Hague. This time is considered one of the most influential to the artist’s career due to the inspiration and education he received from Dutch artists such as Anton Mauve, H.J. Weissenbruch, Jozef Israëls, and Jacob Maris. The young van Gogh was particularly attracted to their use of a subdued color palette and loose brushstrokes, which would later become a staple of his oeuvre.
This painting can be considered an early important artwork. The work of art’s broad brushstrokes and murky palette evoke van Gogh’s moody realism, highlighting the atmospheric fog in combination with the austere skyline to create an emotive effect.
The Van Gogh Museum has confirmed the authenticity of this work, and a certificate of authentication accompanies it.
As one of today’s most well-known artists, van Gogh’s paintings belong in the collections of institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate, the Museum of Modern Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and they consistently sell for tens of millions on the secondary market.
