Vincenzo Colleoni (Active in Venice in the second half of the 19th century) - Interior scene with masked characters.
110 x 160 cm without frame, 145 x 194 cm with frame.

Vincenzo Colleoni was a Venetian painter active in the second half of the nineteenth century and belonging to the Realism movement. This movement expressed itself in opposition to Romanticism and Neoclassicism, trying to depict everyday life and reality with a more objective and less idealized approach.
Unfortunately, we do not have many sources on Colleoni and he is among those artists who still need a more in-depth critical study. We know that he exhibited at the National Exhibition of Parma in 1870 with the painting "The importunate dog" and in Naples in 1877 he brought five works with the titles: "Visit to a painter's studio", "Pearl threader", "The acrobats", "A ray of sunshine after the rain" and "Childish contentments".
In our painting, signed in red by the artist, we find a dynamic interior scene where the two female figures in the center are driving away a crowd of very masked characters. curious and interested in seeing the swaddled baby in the left corner of the canvas up close. Even in the dim light a nurse pushes away a character with a hat. The costumes suggest a social event, while the laughter and the strong curiosity of those present allow us to imagine a scandal linked to the birth of this infant.
