About the Item

Walter Quirt's "TWO WOMEN" (1953), was one of forty-two paintings featured in the traveling retrospective titled simply "Walter Quirt", sponsored by the American Federation of Arts (AFA) with a grant from the Ford Foundation in 1960. Between 1960 and 1962, this retrospective moved through seventeen American cities, the work being exhibited in museums, universities, and cultural centers, and viewed by thousands of people. It still bears the museum stamp of the Minneapolis Art Institute Exhibition (1962). There was an exhibition catalogue published with the essay contributed by Robert Coates (1897-1973), art critic for the New Yorker magazine and advocate of Quirt's work. "Two Women" is catalogue No. 14. Writing of this specific period in the artist's oeuvre, Coates states the paintings, "all demonstrate the sheer technical address that Quirt commands and this is lost sight of in his more abstract works." In the 1980 exhibition catalogue for "Walter Quirt: A Retrospective", produced by the University of Minnesota, MN, Guest Curator, Mary Towley Swanson wrote, "In the early 1950s, Quirt became interested in the space surrounding his painted figures. Figurative elements were used sparingly, while the white areas of the canvases defined anatomical parts and landscape spaces." and "Throughout the early-late 1950s, Quirt's subject matter were predominantly women and he began using a staining technique and "expanded his use of the counter curve, explaining in his essays that he equated this motion with positive, non-aggressive energy". Of this specific painting Quirt wrote on the back of a photograph of the piece, "Several days spent on a work which would not 'jell' - washed off. This work executed on same canvas in three hours." After his death in 1968, his widow, Eleanor, in an act of profound grief, kept all his paintings close to her and in climate-controlled storage, unseen by anyone but a few, the artist's legacy ultimately falling into obscurity. In 2015, the first exhibition of Quirt's paintings was produced by Frederick Holmes And Company, and the gallery has remained the exclusive representative of the artist's estate. Quirt's work is found in over thirty permanent American public collections, including MoMA, NYC; the Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; the deYoung Museum and MoMA, San Francisco, and others. The exhibition catalogue from the 2017 retrospective, "Walter Quirt: A Science of Life" is included with the purchase of any Quirt painting or work on paper, while supplies last.
