About the Item

Wasim Kapoor - Krishna Playing Golden Flute Oil on Canvas 53 x 48 inches (unframed size) 2011 (Rolled & Delivered) This painting by Wasim Kapoor (2011) presents a striking and poetic portrayal of Lord Krishna, rendered in his iconic blue form yet with a contemporary sensibility. The figure stands bare-chested, draped simply in white cloth, adorned with golden armlets and jewelry that highlight his divine aura. Krishna holds his flute gracefully, but instead of focusing on a traditional pastoral or mythological backdrop, Kapoor places him against a stark, almost surreal background. A dark, smoky cloud sweeps across the upper part of the canvas, blending seamlessly with Krishna’s flowing hair, evoking both mystery and a sense of transcendence. The work combines realism in its detailed treatment of the body with a dreamlike abstraction that elevates the mood. Kapoor’s Krishna is not just a mythological deity but also an eternal symbol of music, love, and spiritual longing. The painting captures the dual essence of Krishna — as a divine, otherworldly presence and as an intimate, human figure who resonates with deep emotional and cultural significance. About this work : In hindu Mythology Krishna was a God of Love and Seduction .He is known to be the companion of Arjuna , when the Pandavas had gone for war. The whole Bhagwat Gita is full of the wise sayings of Krishna to Arjuna while he was fighting the war with the Kauravas. However on the lighter side Krishna is the god of Love ans romance and when he plays the flute the Gopikas who look after the cows would leave what they are doing to come and listen to Krishna playing the flute . Here Wasim Kapoor beautifully captures the reclining image of the Krishna beautifully and leisurely playing the flute . Style : Wasim Kapoor is an artist possessed by the dark emotions of pain, suppression, suffering and loneliness. All his subjects, whether simple Indian women involved in daily tasks, Jesus Christ or even the ubiquitous Kolkata rickshaws, reflect angst and torment at the hands of a cruel society. He says, "Ninety per cent of my work is about the suffering of women and their problems." Although he humorously believes it`s because of the underworld-like way he dresses, ("All my life my attire has always been black. I wear a black coat, black jacket, black kurta and carry a silver stick.") others think that it`s the controversies he seems to be ever-embroiled in. From his portrayal of the Burkha clad women, to supposedly agreeing to paint a nude portrait of a famous actress, Kapoor has had his fair share of media attention. About the Artist and his work : Born : Wasim Kapoor is well known painter of India. He was born on 3rd January, 1951 in Lucknow. Education : He acquired First Class Diploma in Fine Arts from the Indian College of Arts and Draftmanship, Calcutta in 1971. Solo and Group Shows : Wasim Kapoor has always been a central figure on the Indian art scene. Kapoor has been exhibiting his works in solo and group shows for more than thirty years now, and seems to have achieved more in this time than most artists do in their entire careers. He has contributed proceeds from some of his sales towards a leprosy centre and even taken part in the Picasso centenary exhibition by Calcutta painters in 1981. Works : Kapoor has executed series with themes ranging from Adam and Eve, Victims and Silence, to something he called an Anti-Burkha` theme in his 1980 Captive series. Kapoor says that the poignant and melancholic images he paints are simply expressions of what he feels and sees every day. He admits to being inspired by the Dutch artist Rembrandt, and by the children and life in his city, Kolkata, as well. His Christ crucifixion series earned him quite a name. His ‘victim’ series from 1984 depicts the hardships of prostitutes who have been abused and mistreated, emanating from a body of degradation. Wasim has also painted the goddess Durga, inspired by the annual grand festivities in Kolkata that he never got to be involved in as a child. Award : He got Shiromoni Award from Asian Paints 1985, award from Govt of West Bengal 1984, awards from Academy of Fine Arts and Birla Academy of Art & Culture. Kapoor has a movie that has been made on him and is the recipient of various awards and accolades. His works are in tech collection of various prestigious museums and private and public collections. Passed away 24th January, 2022.

One of the most popular series of the Master Artist, The Golden Flute is the artists more romantic rendition of Art. The iconic figures of Krishna, Radha, and Ganesha that found lyrical expression in the Icons series are modern representations and sophisticated idealizations of the same images in the popular media. Krishna is a cosmic musician, and the tune he creates by playing his transcendental flute is embodied with cosmic energy. When Krishna is depicted as being between the age of 5 and 8, it is always with his flute. Therefore, during this period, he is aptly called Murlidhara (murali means “flute,” and dhara means “hold”), signifying the one who holds the flute. He is never without it, whether he is with his mother, on the grazing grounds with his herd of cows, among his cowherd companions or roaming around on the Jamuna banks. Gopis lose their selves in this tune. For them, music becomes the voice of love, which is too passionate and secretive. Style : The city of Kolkata has always figured prominently in his work. His themes come from his personal interactions with its urban milieu - its sickness and sordidness, its violence and vulnerability and all that compounds its existential agony. Shuvaprasanna has depicted varying moods of the city and its people, its places, and all its facets that make the city distinctive. He doesn't merely portray reality as 'matter of fact' and his presentation of reality often has dream-like elements in it. In terms of technique, Shuvaprasanna boasts a precise, finely executed style that yields an unmistakable visual intensity. He works comfortably in an assortment of media, including oil on canvas, charcoal, and mixed media. About the Artist and his work : Born : In Calcutta, 1947. Education : Graduated from Indian College of Art (R.B. University, Calcutta) in 1969. Exhibitions : Shuvaprasanna has had several gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the Tao Art Gallery and at the Chawla Art Gallery, Square One Mall. Several works by the artist have been sold at auction, including 'ABODE' sold at Waddington's 'Fine Prints & Photography Auction...
