About the Item

William Lester Stevens Winter Landscape Signed lower right Oil on canvas 32 x 36 inches Born on June 15, 1888, in Rockport, Massachusetts, Stevens displayed his artistic abilities from a young age and initially learned under Parker Perkins, a renowned marine painter from Rockport. In 1906, a piece by Stevens was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, and three years later, he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Museum School in Boston. While serving in the Army in Europe starting in 1917, the artist continued to paint and sketch. He impressed his superior officers with his skills, leading to an extended stay that allowed him to further explore the works of the masters in European museums. Upon returning home after the war, Stevens received an invitation from John Pepper of the Boston Art Club to hold a solo exhibition. One of the works featured in this show was selected for the annual exhibition of Oil Paintings by Contemporary American Artists at the Corcoran Gallery. Stevens made his way back to Rockport and in 1921, together with fifty fellow artists including Aldro Hibbard and Anthony Thieme, established the Rockport Art Association, which elevated the reputation of the Rockport and Cape Ann region. In addition to his summer teaching in Rockport, he also instructed at Boston University and subsequently at Princeton. Stevens, always on the lookout for untouched nature, relocated from Rockport to Springfield, then to Conway, Vinalhaven, and ultimately to Grand Manan, Maine. Steven's admiration of nature has been described in the records of the Rockport Art Association, "An Appreciation of W. Lester Stevens" (1971): "He painted nature in all her moods from the blistering hot sun to the freezing wet cold. Nature was his guide, intuition his master...Instinct alone beckoned him on. Painting was his ruling passion".

"Winter Scene, " George Gardner Symons, Snowy Hill Landscape, Pennsylvania
By George Gardner Symons
Located in New York, NY
George Gardner Symons (1863 - 1930) Winter Scene Oil on canvas 20 x 25 inches Signed lower right Provenance: Private Collection, St. Louis, Missouri William A. Karges Fine Art Gallery, Carmel, California Private Collection, Washington A landscape and marine artist, George Symons was one of America's more noted plein-air painters who combined styles of impressionism and realism. His works are cited for their energy and simplicity, and he often did panoramic views. He was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1861, with the name of George Gardner Simon, but he changed his last name to Symons when he returned from study in England because of concern about anti-semitism. Not much is known about his early life. He first studied at the Chicago Art Institute where he became a close, life-long friend of William Wendt. They painted together in California and then in Cornwall, England in 1898. He also studied in Paris, and Munich and London, and joining a colony of artists at St. Ives, adopted the plein-air techniques of Julius Olsson, Adrian Stokes, and Rudolph Hellwag. He worked in Chicago as a commercial artist, and about 1903 returned to California with Wendt and built a studio in Laguna Beach and became active in western art societies including the California Art Club. He returned often, but maintained his primary studio...
