About the Item

This is a beautiful contemporary Chinese ink painting by Wu Lan-Chiann. In 2010, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, curated an exhibition "Fresh Ink" that explored the landscape of contemporary Chinese ink paintings. Christie's and Sotheby's soon held private sales in recognition of this movement of what is essentially an ancient Chinese ink method, explored in new ways by its artists. One of the artists presented in Christie's Chinese ink events is Wu Lan-Chiann, a rare female painter recognized in the Chinese ink and brush method. ABOUT THIS PIECE: Floating Leaves II, 2019 Ink and metal leaf on paper 25 1/2 x 21 in (65 x 53 cm) Signed by the artist, with one seal Unframed Floating Leaves I, II and II may be purchased together or separately and paired as you like it. This painting uses a very masterful, precise yet delicate style of the Chinese ink technique known as "gong bi", as well as expressive style, in ink and metal leaf (Palladium or Gold) on hand-made paper - See artist's statement below. One of the paintings from this series of leaves paintings was added to the permanent collection of Kansas City’s Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, a museum renowned for its extensive Asian art holdings (image of scroll painting shown in images). Per artist: "My series of leaves paintings are created with ink and metal leaf (Palladium or Gold) on hand-made paper. In these works, I want to create powerful images showing leaves and dust flying around and up in the air. I use ink and color to paint the leaves, and palladium or gold flakes for the dust, which add to the energy in the painting. Depending on the viewing angle, the metal flakes appear either as shimmering speckles or splashes of ink. One painting in this series, Before the Storm(2015), was recently collected by the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. In my view, each leaf has its own cycle, has its unique shape and intensity, and has its own path through the air and will touch the earth in its own way. The leaves represent human beings, and each has different path in life; upbringing, life experience and destiny. I paint some leaves clear and some vague; other are rendered complete and yet others damaged. Some have a clear direction, but others are hurt and lost; some lives are peaceful and others are turbulent, all captured in these paintings." ABOUT THE ARTIST: Artist Wu Lan-Chiann studied painting with Lingnan School master Ou Haonian at the Chinese Culture University in Taipei and with American painter Arnold Mesches at New York University. While the highly regarded Lingnan school of Chinese painting is evident in her early work, Wu Lan-Chiann has emerged with her own distinctive style that she honed over the past two decades. With her decisive brushwork and profound technique in the Chinese ink method, the artist’s work is marked by a strong poetic narrative, forging a unique visual language drawing from both Eastern and Western influences. This exhibit shows a selection of Wu Lan-Chiann’s work produced over the past twenty years. At the core of Wu Lan-Chiann’s work, is a deep personal contemplation of universal themes and values that connect people across time and place. While continuing a tradition that is centuries old, her paintings are distinctly contemporary both in concept and execution. Starting from a young age, she combined Asian and Western modes of representation into a personal style that is intensely poetic. Blending two very different painting traditions, she has emerged as an artist with an authentic style marked by decisive brushwork and delicate application of colour. In her recent work, Wu Lan-Chiann is interested in capturing the precious but fleeting moments of life through the depiction of free-floating petals and leaves. She sees a comparison between the rhythm of nature and the human cycle of life. Her work captures special moments and at the same time represents the invariable and eternal cycle of life and nature.” Born and raised in Taiwan, artist Wu Lan-Chiann received her BFA -with highest honors- from the Chinese Culture University in Taipei, Taiwan, and holds a MA from New York University (School of Art and Art Education).
