About the Item

Lucia Riccelli (*1979 in Rome) Lucia Riccelli was born in Rome and attended the Liceo Artistico Statale with a specialization in painting. In 1993 she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome with a diploma in stage design. She studied ballet at a private conservatory in Rome and received her diploma in 1990. Lives and works in Vienna, Rome and Zakynthos. Work For years, Lucia Riccelli has been fascinated by the depiction of people with their multifaceted expressions and the variety of their movements. Playing with presence and transparency, reality and imagination, contours and tapered surfaces characterize the expressive works. Female bodies float, suggested by a dynamic brushwork and powerfully expressive additions and juxtapositions of the coloring, over the untreated raw linen fabric. They appear freely and without comment in front of an empty nothing - also to eliminate any kind of traditional assignment of female roles and to enable and evoke a personal, unbiased reflection of what is being portrayed. With the new work block, Riccelli manages to implement her manifested pictorial language and expand it by a new dimension without losing even one aspect. In a balancing act, the spontaneity, the lightness and the freedom of her figures are tied to the picture carrier with subtle anchor points. The dynamic implementation on the screen, influenced by performative arts such as dance and music, is expanded to an additional level. “It is the female figures that characterize one of the starting points of my painting. I have always been concerned with exploring the image of women. Obsessions and changes should be made conscious by allowing the figure of the woman to oscillate between compliance, rebellion, consciousness and renunciation. It is sometimes my goal to reflect on certain values that are ascribed to women based on tradition, but also on discrimination. I display them in imaginary places in order to liberate them from their role and the prejudices that go with it. In order to be able to analyze the dynamics of interpersonal relationships arising from these new circumstances, I draw on suggestions from everyday life. They are random occurrences that are processed into new stories.” (Lucia Riccelli, 2011)

Wild (love cats)
By Darlene Cole
Located in Montreal, Quebec
Childhood, a reoccurring theme in Darlene Cole’s work, is represented by prepubescent girls and boys, engaged in some type of action. Without adult supervision, these activities confer on Cole’s children an adult-like aura, empowering them. The artist cites Neil Postman’s 1982 book about the decline in innocence in American culture The Disappearance of Childhood as a text that informs her work. In it, Postman argues that communications technology, such as the invention of the television and later, the Internet, contributed to children losing their innocence, thus transforming them into young adults. A source of inspiration for Cole are the works of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of English painters, poets and critics, founded in 1848. They studied nature attentively, employed vivid colours and depicted unconventional-looking women. Just like in Pre-Raphaelite works, the girls in Cole’s paintings embody enigma, distance, and beauty. The past, in general, is a great source of inspiration for the artist. Cole’s cottage, or ‘artist’s retreat’ as she calls it, was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Since she kept all the original furniture and linens intact, the cottage, on the side of a lake, seems to belong to the past. Nature, another omnipresent theme in Cole’s work, is in many works represented by flowers, such as pink David Austin roses...
