About the Item

Let Go 1, 2, 3 (Series) In these paintings, Zdrale depicts multiple figures—often iterations of the same man—locked in a cycle of struggle. The ropes that coil around or extend from their hands act as both literal and metaphorical restraints: they are the ties of control, resistance, and self-imposed limitation. Each figure strains against the rope, as if wrestling with an invisible force, yet the tension is internal—an argument with the self. The repeated gestures, clenched fists, and taut cords visualize the emotional friction between control and surrender. The ropes become extensions of the psyche—manifestations of attachment to expectation, fear, and the impulse to dominate one’s own emotions. Each iteration captures a new stage of attempted release, yet the binding persists, mirroring the cyclical nature of grief and resistance. This dynamic directly reflects Zdrale’s statement about “fighting oneself and resisting reality.” The ropes, therefore, are not tools of external bondage but emblems of inner resistance, holding the figures in a state of suspended struggle—a human condition that only dissolves when one finally lets go.
