Hand signed in Hebrew and English. Done in a style similar and influenced by Marc Chagall. Svi Raphaely (also known as Tzvi Raphaeli, Zvi Raphaely) was an Israeli Impressionist painter. A Rabbi and an artist, he successfully merged two divergent careers together into a blend of beauty and harmony. Tzvi Raphaeli was born in Egypt, moved to Paris, France at early age, where later he could study art at the famous Ecole des Beaux Arts. During the dark years of World War II he studied art at the famous Ecole des Beaux Arts under the direction and guidance of Jean Souverbie. While a student there, he was also a "Maquizard", a member of the FFI, the French underground resistance movement in occupied France. In 1945, after WWII, he moved to Jerusalem, Israel. He studied In the Bezalel Museum, under the famous Israeli artist Jacob Steinhardt, Raphaeli once again took brush in hand to transmit to works of art his emotions and feeling in the new land-the Holy Land. Most of his paintings, oil painting or watercolor describe market places, Hasidic Jews, old streets of Jerusalem and Chassidic Rabbis of Tzfas scenes, flowers or olive trees. All of his Expressionist paintings, whatever the subject, are infused with delight, affection and poetry. Kabbalist and world renowned French-Israeli Judaic Fauvist artist Zvi Raphaeli of Jerusalem. Well known for his "Street scene in Jerusalem" This is a more rare and unusual subject matter to find. All his paintings and modernist ceramic sculpture, whatever the subject, are infused with delight, affection and poetry. Austrian born Israeli Art critic Theodore F. Meisels once wrote in The Jerusalem Post: "Should Raphaely, ever attempt to harmonize his two worlds, then this genuine painting 'Chassid' could develop into an Israeli Chagall...". On an occasion Marc Chagall himself said about Raphaely: "Raphaely is one very unique painter who knows what the color wants". Zvi Raphaeli died in 2005, leaving behind memories of the Jewish street in Shtetl Israel from the early 20th century. He is among the most collected artists in the Jewish community along with Itshak Holtz, Elena Flerova, Zalman Kleinman, Hendel Lieberman, Mane Katz, Reuven Rubin, Zvi Malnovoizer, Huvy, Menashe Kadishman, Agam, Yoram Ranaan. In this painting the artist uses gestural brushstrokes, which causes distortion and exaggeration for emotional effect. Andre Elbaz uses as his subject figures walking in old city Jerusalem. Years later, in 1976, he exhibited his paintings at the Tel-Aviv Museum. In parallel to his career as a painter, Elbaz is also known as a filmmaker. He produced several short films in France, Canada and the United States. One of them, La nuit n'est jamais complète (The night is never complete), won a prize at the "5th Biennale de Paris in 1967". Among the themes chosen for the many films he produced, there was a short one about the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, as well as a series of drawings entitled Seuls (Alone), with texts written by both Elie Wiesel...
