About the Item

Flemish painter 17th-18th century Construction of the Tower of Babel Oil on canvas 51 x 64 cm Framed 66 x 78 cm If there is a subject in art that has been taken up several times throughout the ages in an ever new and original vision closely linked to the individual sensibility of the author, the subject of the Tower of Babel perfectly embodies these requirements. And our work, by a Flemish painter active between the 17th and 18th centuries, is a rare and valuable testimony of this. An ancient subject, an evergreen myth and metaphor, which in art has always had the power to teleport the observer into another world, making him curious and fascinated. One cannot fail to mention the celebrated Tower of Babel by Bruegel the Elder, which is the perfect example of this feeling, and in general the many other works that the best Flemish painters have created to honour this theme, displaying incredible painterly and inventive qualities. Although a figment of the author's imagination, let us remember that the Tower of Babel is one of the most fascinating and enigmatic stories in the Bible, quoted in the book of Genesis (11:1-9[1]), where it is said that men decided to build a city and a tower whose top would reach to Heaven. But God, seeing the excessive ambition and unity of men, who ruled the earth in peaceful union and with one language, decided to wreak havoc and prevented the completion of the structure, confusing their languages so that they could no longer understand each other and leading to the dispersion of the peoples. In the bottom left-hand corner we see the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II, a symbol of pride, followed by a group of courtiers and soldiers and portrayed as the architect shows him his work, astonished by the workers. In the background, the protagonist of the canvas, stands the imposing construction along the banks of the Euphrates River, consisting of a complex structure incorporating several eclectically overlapping architectural styles, drawn from the Italian Renaissance tradition with the addition of elements of a decidedly more medieval and northern European tradition. Observing the details, we can lose ourselves in admiring the fervent activity of the builders, with the small figures scrambling up and down the ramps to carry out the majestic work as quickly as possible. Landscape See Paint Oil on canvas Flemish Old master 18th Century Italian Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Flemish painter active in Italy in the eighteenth century Coastal landscape of the Mediterranean with architectures and figures Oil painting on canvas (69 x 88 cm., in frame 80 x 100 cm.) The suggestive view proposed depicts a coastal view with a bay and the ruins of an ancient building, probably a monastery or a church, and in the background another building with a garden surrounded by high walls close to the shore. The type of landscape, typical of the southern Italian environment, and the intimate atmosphere that welcomes the scene, attributes the authorship of the work to a landscape painter active in the eighteenth century, presumably in Italy in this period, with immediate references to the Dutch school , and in particular to the production of Jacob de Heusch and above all of Gaspar van Wittel, considered the progenitor of Italian landscape painting. In fact, in the rendering of the architectural details, in the purity with which the buildings have been reconstructed, as well as in the atmosphere that encompasses the entire landscape, a marked correspondence to the so-called "Vanvitellian realism" can be seen: in fact, a comparison with a certain series of views which the Dutchman...

Knight Van Douw Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17/18th Century Flemish Art Italy
By Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677)
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
After Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677) The stop of a traveler on horseback near a post station Oil painting on canvas 45 x 55 cm In frame cm. 55 x 65 In this pleasant painting, depicting a knight parked near a post station, the Flemish tradition is based on a strong Italianizing sensitivity, especially by observing the setting and its peculiar brightness. The mixture of genres and the particular style of execution make it easy to trace the authorship back to a Nordic author but active in Rome, or strongly influenced by the style in vogue in the Eternal city, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: we are referring, in in particular, to a follower of the Antwerp Simon Johannes van Douw. The chromatic elegance and refinement with which he outlines the figures are typical aspects of his painting. The scene takes place outside a cottage, probably a post office for travelers, where a modest family divides the tasks by assisting the knights. We see a young boy who hands water to the horse before he sets off again, the father is preparing to feed him with straw and the mother who instead takes care of the little son. The Italian reminiscences, evident in our painting, have been absorbed by many Northern European authors such as Nicolaes Berchem, Philips Wouwerman or Johannes Lingelbach, all inspired by the leader Pieter van Laer...
