About the Item
Giovanni Bernardo Carbone (Genoa, 1616 - 1683), workshop
Portrait of a gentleman in armor with battle scene in the background
Oil on oval canvas (117 x 105 cm. - In gilded frame 124 x 112 cm.)
This fascinating portrait depicting a knight in a proud attitude and dating back to the mid-17th century, depicts the gentleman with his armor, immortalized in a night of battle, which can be recognized in the scene depicted below him, animated by the roar of the cannon shots.
His pose is regal, portrait standing in three quarters, canonical to all high ranking officers, in this case of a general, recognizable thanks to the elegantly draped and girdled band on the arm, facing the viewer as if to recreate the sense of movement , which revives the composition and gives an aspect of great aristocratic dignity.
The work is to be placed within the pictorial production of the portraitist Giovanni Bernardo Carbone (Genoa, 1616 - 1683), who established himself in the thriving seventeenth-century Genoese art market and successfully dedicated himself to this genre, achieving excellent results with his workshop on the example of the famous models of Anton Van Dyck, so much so that he can be considered a follower of the Flemish artist.
The Flemish author had in fact lived in Genoa around the twenties of the century, becoming a point of reference for many authors of the city, who looked at and studied his style, even when he later returned to his homeland.
In this regard, in relation to our portrait, one cannot fail to mention the portrait that Van Dyck made for Count Hendrik van den Bergh, belonging to one of the most illustrious families in Flanders, from which he partly takes up the composition, but adapting the features to the customer of the painting.
The first version of the painting is in Madrid, at the Prado Museum, while a second version (for many an excellent studio replica), is kept in the French collection of the Condé museum, in Chantilly.

The painting was also popularized thanks to the engraving by Paulus Pontius, who was in charge of transferring some of the best-known paintings to copper by both Van Dyck (1599-1641)

St. Joseph with Flower Stick
Oil on oval canvas
92 x 70 cm.
In antique frame 106 x 85 cm.
The work shows us an intense image of St. Joseph, portrayed according to the classical iconography that sees him as a mature man holding in his hands a staff from which lilies bloom, symbol of the Virgin's purity.
This iconographic attribute also alludes to his figure as God's chosen one as Mary's future husband. According to the apocryphal gospels, the Virgin had grown up in the Temple of Jerusalem, following a monastic lifestyle, and when she reached marriageable age, each of the suitors was given a dry branch...

Portrait Philip V King Rigaud Paint Oil on canvas 17/18th Century Old master Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Hyacinthe Rigaud (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743) Circle
Portrait of Philip V, King of Spain (Versailles 1683 - Madrid 1746)
Oil on canvas
72 x 59 cm - framed 87 x 74 cm.
The painting examined here, depicting King Philip V of Spain (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743), is to be placed in the circle of the painter Hyacinthe Rigaud (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743), one of the most significant portrait painters of his time and a great interpreter of the French school.
This is a work of excellent pictorial quality: note the rendering of the facial features and the sharpness of the contours emphasised by the light. The face is characterised by chiaroscuro passages that verisimilarly reproduce light and its effects, rendered with great skill.
Philip V wears a black satin costume with a sword at his side, he wears the stiff white Spanish collar and at the same time wears the blue sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit and the collar of the Habsburg Order of the Golden Fleece: this bringing together of the two main orders of France and Spain announced the possibility of a union between the two crowns.
In Spanish costume, this effigy is nevertheless fully in line with the French tradition of ceremonial portraiture, also testifying to the renewal that Rigaud had brought about, particularly through the relationship between the character and the splendour of the decoration.
The work is inspired, reworked in a reduced format to make it suitable for a private clientele, by the large painting that Rigaud made for the sovereign around 1700, today conserved in the Louvre, reproduced by the same workshop in numerous other versions.

(French, 18th Century)

“Art of Collecting,” Flint Institute of Art, Flint, Michigan, 23 November 2018 – 6 January 2019.
This vibrant portrait of young man was traditionally considered a work by Jacques-Louis David, whose style it recalls, but to whom it cannot be convincingly attributed. Rather, it would appear to be by a painter in his immediate following—an artist likely working in France in the first decade of the nineteenth century. Several names have been proposed as the portrait’s author: François Gérard, Louis Hersent, Anne-Louis Girodet (Fig. 1), Theodore Gericault, and Jean-Baptiste Wicar, among others. Some have thought the artist Italian, and have proposed Andrea Appiani, Gaspare Landi...
