About the Item

Artist: Halim Flowers & Clarence James Title: The More You Love Date: March 15, 2025 Medium: Acrylic, Aerosol, Oil Stick on Canvas Unframed Dimensions: 40" x 40" x 1.5" Signature: Signed Edition: Unique This work was created collaboratively at a live painting “Artists in Residence” day event at DTR Modern Boston in March of 2025. Halim Flowers is a visual artist, spoken word performer, businessman, and author of eleven published non-fiction works. A Member of the Board of Directors of The Frederick Douglass Project for Justice and Cultural DC, he is an ardent advocate for human rights and is best known for his quote, “Love is the Antibody”. In the short time since the Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act of 2016 effectuated his 2019 release from prison, he has created a stunning spectrum of paintings and spoken word comprised of a benevolent mission forged and galvanized over decades in a pressure cooker. Clarence James' artwork is an exploration of truth and self. He makes abstract, figurative artwork that establishes a connection between conscious and subconscious factors, individuals, themselves and universal consciousness. His paintings feature bold color, urgent line and brushwork, and graphic shapes and forms. His style combines painting and drawing, abstraction and representation, a specific use of mixed media materials and an eclectic iconography of figurative elements. While contemporary in his choice of materials and subjects, he bridges a wide range of historical influences, including, Neo-expressionism, surrealism, cubism and street art. He alters classical conventions of portraiture, and creates an allegorical narrative filtered through the lens of popular culture and daily experience within society.

Surrounded by “paint and fumes”, he explored his heritage and learnt about artists like Diego Velázquez, Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. His art studies in London and subsequent political science degree took him to Wall Street, New York, in 1999, before he embarked on a career in the music industry and wrote lyrics for Michael Jackson. He was hugely influenced by pop culture and the aesthetics of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Created in oil and acrylic, Domingo’s works incorporate mixed media, collage and graffiti. His poetic imagination is visualised through layers of text and visual cues including symbols and iconic brands and figures. He says his work is a “conversation of colours”, with its distinctive style identified by the raw strokes of paint. Each piece is designed to have a positive influence on the viewer. Domingo’s art is collected by celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom...
