Collection of three original 1930s works on paper by 20th century WPA era, New Mexico Modernist, Hilaire Hiler (1898-1966), all housed in custom frames with archival materials and Museum Glass (UV Protection/Anti-reflective). Overall measurements as displayed are 20 ½ x 55 ¼ inches. Left: "Indian with Bow in Fox Costume", 1934, lithograph/color silkscreen, signed lower right framed dimensions measure 20 ½ x 17 ¼ x 1 ¼ inches. Image size is 9 ¾ x 7 ¼ inches.. Center: "Pinto" (Native American on horseback in black, white and blue), 1933, mixed media with charcoal, signed and dated lower right, framed dimensions measure 20 ¼ x 17 ¼ x 1 ¼ inches. Image measures 9 x 7 inches. Right: Untitled (Seated Figure: Semi-Abstract), circa 1935, gouache painting, signed lower right, framed imensions measure 19 ¾ x 16 ¾ x 1 inches. Image size is 9 ½ x 6 ½ inches. Provenance: Estate of Hilaire Hiler Hilaire Hiler was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was raised in Providence, Rhode Island. Hiler took art classes as a child at the Rhode Island School of Design. When he was older, Hiler studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art, Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, and William Server's studio. He also studied at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Denver, Golden State University, and National College in Ontario, Canada. He continued on to France, studying at the University of Paris in 1919. Hiler lived in Paris from 1919-1934, supporting himself as a jazz musician and a piano player for The Jockey Club. Hiler moved back to America in 1934, settling in San Francisco. He was commissioned by the Works Progress Administration to paint murals in the Aquatic Park Bath House, which is now the National Maritime Museum. In the 1940's, he founded Fremont College in Los Angeles. In 1944, he moved the college to Santa Fe (now named Hiler College). Abstract Work on Paper Mid-Century Modernism Greek American Gouache Drawing. A modernist artist who emigrated to America from Greece in 1904, when he was fourteen years old, Jean Xceron is described as having a reputation as an artist that has mysteriously fallen into obscurity---especially since he was reportedly quite prominent during his lifetime. However, a partial explanation of that omission is the fact that many of his papers and early records have been lost. He was a painter of biomorphic abstractions and did collages, which were influenced by Dadaism. Xceron was active in New York City when modernism was gaining influence.
