About the Item

Circle of Adriaen Brouwer (Oudenaerde, 1605/1606 - Antwerp, 1638) Pipe smoker in a tavern Oil on panel, 18 x 23 cm The precious tablet belongs to the circle of Adriaen Brouwer, a Flemish painter of the Dutch Golden Age. At a young age, Brouwer perhaps moved from Antwerp to Haarlem, where he became a student of Frans Hals and Adriaen van Ostade. Appreciation for his works among his contemporaries spread very quickly, reaching even among his most famous colleagues to the extent that both Rubens and Rembrandt bought several of his works. Unfortunately, few works have come down to us, partly because of his early death at just 33 years old, making this painting all the more rare and valuable. His popular characterizations were a real watershed in the painting of the time, through a thematic treatment very close to the reality of the taverns and inns of the Flemish towns of the time; moreover, the strong colors contrasting with the dark setting stand out even more while the materiality of the painting gives tone and body to the figures in the foreground. In contrast, the environment behind the smoker is more blurred and blunt in contours, with faces and expressions distorted in the soft brightness of the dimly lit room. The subject fits neatly into the production of Brouwer, who specialized in the depiction of peasants, drinkers and smokers, within contexts such as precisely gambling dens, taverns and inns. Absolutely noteworthy is the psychological attention, portraiture on par with that of his master Frans Hals, given to the protagonists of his depictions, such as this smoker, caught looking pensively out of focus, almost lost in the fumes of alcohol and pipe. The disheveled pose, with the jug resting obliquely from his right hand and his legs wide and precariously balanced on the stool, adds further verisimilitude to the effigy and the precise moment he is experiencing in the tavern, part of the group but at the same time isolated and protagonist.

Knight Van Douw Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17/18th Century Flemish Art Italy
By Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677)
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
After Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677) The stop of a traveler on horseback near a post station Oil painting on canvas 45 x 55 cm In frame cm. 55 x 65 In this pleasant painting, depicting a knight parked near a post station, the Flemish tradition is based on a strong Italianizing sensitivity, especially by observing the setting and its peculiar brightness. The mixture of genres and the particular style of execution make it easy to trace the authorship back to a Nordic author but active in Rome, or strongly influenced by the style in vogue in the Eternal city, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: we are referring, in in particular, to a follower of the Antwerp Simon Johannes van Douw. The chromatic elegance and refinement with which he outlines the figures are typical aspects of his painting. The scene takes place outside a cottage, probably a post office for travelers, where a modest family divides the tasks by assisting the knights. We see a young boy who hands water to the horse before he sets off again, the father is preparing to feed him with straw and the mother who instead takes care of the little son. The Italian reminiscences, evident in our painting, have been absorbed by many Northern European authors such as Nicolaes Berchem, Philips Wouwerman or Johannes Lingelbach, all inspired by the leader Pieter van Laer...
