1940s New York Interior -- An Evening Scene of Artist and His Wife Wonderful moody 1940s New York interior and figurative oil painting in Ashcan School style by New York artist Caryl Harris (American, b 1884 - ?). Label attributes it as "Self-portrait in Connecticut House. Pic in mantel his own painting of the Smith House as it looked in 1940s (Smith House) Franklin NY." Signed lower right. Condition: Good; professionally restored and cleaned; new UV-resistant, non yellowing varnish applied. Presented in new wood gilt-toned frame. Image size 16"H x 20"W. Framed size is 15.5"H x 19.5"H. Caryl Harris was a telephone traffic engineer in New York City for thirty five years and after being offered some oil paints by a friend he started his artistic journey. Approaching painting originally as a hobby, within only two years he produced and exhibited paintings that brought him recognition as an artist of unusual merit with one painting titled "Sailing" exhibited in the Businessman's Art Club and reproduced in American Artist magazine. Two other paintings were given special recognition in Art Digest. Mr. Harris was also a talented pianist and worked in metals, leather and pottery. He called himself an "artist by surprise."
