In Clementine, Dani Humberstone invites the viewer to linger in the warm luminosity of a single, sun-ripened fruit. The orange glow of the clementine pulses with vibrancy, its slightly mottled skin evoking tactile memory. Attached leaves, painted in rich green tones with crisp definition, arc naturally from the top and add vertical tension. The fruit's form is nearly spherical, and its shadows pool softly beneath it, suspended in a void of jet-black stillness that sharpens its presence and amplifies its color.
The technique here is refined and deliberate. Humberstone layers oil paint with masterful gradation to evoke the fruit's subtle imperfections-the kind that render it real and desirable. The soft dapples of highlight suggest not just a light source but a specific time of day, as if the fruit had just been picked and placed under inspection. As with the artist's other still lifes, there is no setting beyond the fruit itself; Humberstone removes distraction and foregrounds observation, asking us to see the ordinary anew.
The result is a glowing meditation on ripeness and temporality. Every element-the saturated orange, the gentle shift in tone across the peel, the slightly curled leaf-echoes life and transience. Though compact in size, the piece commands attention, offering sensory intimacy and visual clarity.
Artist Bio:
Born in London, Dani attended a Rudolph Steiner school before studying fashion in Brighton. After which she returned to her original love of painting and drawing, freelancing for years as an artist before setting up a publishing company where she worked as the principal artist and designer. After many years in business, she left publishing and turned to painting full time.
Dani was Vice-President of the Society of Women Artists for five years becoming Director when she stepped down.
The winner of several awards for painting, she is regularly invited to exhibit at the Florence Biennale and has been selected to show at the RA Summer Exhibition. She continues to show regularly in the UK, Europe, Asia & the USA.
Using principally the imagery of fruit in much of her work, her interest is largely in its metaphorical and symbolic use in the visual arts as well as strong links to language, examples include the Bible, myth and fairy tale, branding, popular culture, language, literature and as symbols of power, passion, and fertility.
The use of traditional painting techniques, strong light and shade or chiaroscuro creates a sense of drama. There is a surreal quality and humour in much of her work but importantly there is also a respectful nod to the painters of the Renaissance and many influences from the Dutch Golden Age of the principally 17th century.

Painting directly from life allows her to translate three dimensions into two and capture the essence or life force of the subject. Individual fruits damage easily; so as they slowly age she tracks their gradual decay in the painting as she works. Fruit has been used metaphorically in art and language for centuries. It has helped Illustrate Fairy Tales, Mythology, The Bible and Shakespeare.etc An apple in Renaissance painting was symbolic of ‘a fallen woman’ and we still use fruit analogies to describe ourselves and our lives today. In her own work the artist also uses elements of abstraction, landscape or line drawing to hint at a deeper narrative within and opening the door to unseen possibilities beyond the immediate image. Dani Humberstone paints in oils, predominantly Old Holland Classic Oilcolour - using transparent glazes over opaque colour which creates intense levels of luminosity and depth. Strong light and shade, chiaroscuro, give atmosphere and tone.
