About the Item
This 30" x 24" painting by David Crown, captures an interior scene, rendered in an abstract and simplistic manner. The painting uses a vibrant color palette, with yellow, blue, red, and pink as dominant. The painting is composed primarily of geometric shapes, particularly rectangles and squares used to represent various elements in the painting. The scene appears to depict a room with a table, on which various objects are placed. These objects resemble cups, a teapot and a vase, all painted blue and outlined in red/orange against the yellow surface of the table, which adds to the simplistic yet abstract style the artist is trying to create. The room is depicted using geometric shapes, adding to the abstract nature of the artwork. Above the room are windows or frames, each showcasing a different scene. One window, framed with an orange boarder, on the left side of the work, reveals a sky filled with hot air balloons painted in reds, blues and pinks against a yellow backdrop, while the window next to it on the right, shows pink stars drawn against a light blue background and to the right of that window, there is another orange framed window, revealing yet two more hot air balloons also painted with red, blues, and pinks. The painting’s style is abstract, with no realistic details, and the artist uses bold strokes to create a sense of movement and energy. The signature “A. D. Crown 08-2012” is visible in the lower right hand corner, indicating the artist and the year of creation.
A. David Crown, M.D. (1924 - 2016) was born in London, England, and received his education at Cambridge University, the University of London, and the London Hospital Medical School. In 1947, he became a physician and moved to Rochester, NY in 1948. He practiced internal medicine until 1982 when he retired. His retirement allowed him to pursue his passion for art full-time. His works are in numerous collections across America, Canada, Japan, and Europe. Crown was also the Founder and Director of the International Mezzotint Society. This society is dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of mezzotint, a printmaking process. His art has been the subject of one-man exhibitions at institutions such as the Jacksonville Museum of Art, the Polk Museum of Art, Orlando Museum of Art, Florida Atlantic University, University of Florida, and the State Capitol Building Rotunda, Tallahassee, Florida.
