De Rossi Gustavo
"Interior of the Tribune" View of Florence Oil on Canvas The Uffizi Copyists

circa 1896

About the Item

Gustavo De Rossi (1876-1946), "Interior of the Tribuna-Venere dei Medici," oil on canvas signed lower left. Gustavo De Rossi belonged for a time to that group called "the Copists of the Uffizi." In 1769, with the opening of the Uffizi to the public, one category that was well represented by visitors to the Gallery was copyists. However, it was in the nineteenth century that the demand for reproductions of "handmade" works grew exponentially, and to regulate this phenomenon, a "Regulation for Copying the Monuments of the RR Gallery of Statues," consisting of nine articles, was established in 1831. First the copyists, who worked on commission, had to submit a request on blank paper to the director of the Galleries, in which they indicated their personal details and the work they wanted to copy. The director generally gave his assent, but he also had the power to deny it. In addition, the director would determine the timing of copying, the location, and decide whether or not to remove the painting from the original frame and protective glass. The Regulations also specified the behavior that copyists were to keep in the Gallery: they were required to dress appropriately for the place, to keep quiet while working, and there was an absolute ban on touching the works. In a pre-photography era, copyists were crucial to the dissemination and study of art. Museum stamps were strictly affixed to the work, which thus still allow us to attribute it with certainty to this period. De Rossi has here beautifully depicted the Uffizi Tribune with its sculptures, Venus de Medici in the foreground, giving excellent perspective emphasis to the beautiful flooring. De Rossi after all was a painter of views, many of his canvases depicting panoramas of the city of Florence, works that were in high demand by the burgeoning mass tourism that passed through the city. In 1904 he participated in the Italian Exposition in London. In 1948, "Palazzo Michelangiolo" and "Ponte Vecchio" will be exhibited at the exhibition on 19th century Livorno.
