About the Item

This piece is an original oil painting on panel. It is an impressionistic view of an interior with light filtering through windows outside of the picture place, lighting up slices of an lush carpeted hall. This piece is the artist's recollection of a hallway in Paris's Musee D'orsay. The piece is framed in a vintage gold frame-please note the hairline crack in the gilding shown in one of the photos. In our view this in no way detracts from the overall presentation in this lovely frame. GC Williams has a degree in art history which gave her an understanding of, and appreciation for, not only the art of the past, but the historical events and ideologies that fostered various aesthetics, movements, and styles. She has studied at several classical ateliers, including three years at Boston's Academy of Realist Art. Her work has been shown in galleries throughout the US and is included in public and private collections. She maintains a studio on the north shore of Massachusetts. "My work is about the little moments of beauty that comprise our existence: the greening of the landscape in early spring, the glint of light on an object; growing things and made objects. I enjoy creating interesting interactions, and making up narratives. I love the way light animates objects and the life shadows give to a space. Humans are innately creative beings. We create in myriad ways--painting is one of them. I have made pictures for as long as I remember. While I appreciate many kinds of art, for me, the ultimate goal is to make a beautiful painting that show parts of the process--evidence of an individual behind the easel. I love calligraphic brush marks and leaving parts of a picture to the viewer's imagination. I love pairing the realistic with the made-up. In this, we participate in creating art together."

"Two Bottles" American Scene Realism Mid 20th Century Female Artist WPA 1940's Helen Clark Oldfield "Two Bottles," 1943. Signed “Helen Oldfield” lower right. Oil on canvas board, 18 x 14 inches. Provenance: Estate of the Artist. Helen Clark Oldfield was born in Santa Rosa. Her father, James E. Clark, invested in local hops farms. He was a director of the first Santa Rosa Bank. Oldfield lived at 547 Mendocino Avenue, in one of the finest custom-built homes in town. She was the oldest child of the family. They spent summers in their beach cabin at Jenner-by-the-Sea. She was a good student and graduated from DeWitt Montgomery High in Santa Rosa with college standard grades. Unfortunately, this idyllic situation tumbled down suddenly. due to a fraud scandal at the Bank, her father forfeited most of his assets in order to make good on his client's losses. At the time when her high school friends were going east to college, Oldfield followed her family to a new life of farming. She found this life frustrating as there was little time for her interests after conclusion of her daily duties. Here she developed her natural gift for sophisticated needle work. At the time she also took a correspondence course in industrial design and became an expert tailor. Her family was not happy with the farming arrangement. They decided to move to Oakland. In 1921 they purchased a home at 318...
