About the Item

Joanne Tod (b. 1953) is a renowned Canadian painter acclaimed for her unwavering approach to realism, technical precision, and critical wit. She is also one of the country's most celebrated living portrait artists. Toronto's old Stock Exchange building, located at 234 Bay St, is an iconic landmark of the city. The building's unique decoration was completed by Charles Comfort and includes a 22.5-metre-long stone frieze, stainless steel roundels on its doors, and eight painted murals that hang above the trading floor. In these elements, men are depicted working in the various industries that were traded on the Exchange. Today the elegant and iconic TSX facade is surrounded by the glass of a new skyscraper. Tod's painting depicts the doors of the Exchange, shining and reflecting sunlight. The artist is renowned for her treatment of light, here it lends a warmth to the pinkish stone facade and luminosity to the steel features. The details included are comprehensive, down to the cast shadows of the specific Toronto streetlights that stand across the street. The painting is immersive, the space inviting as if one could step inside and feel the warm sunlight on their skin. Tod has frequently depicted institutional buildings such as banks, museums, or post offices to explore the architecture of authority and trust. These essential urban institutions shape our lives whether we acknowledge them or not. In her paintings, decorative elements such as columns and classical façades convey importance and permanence, while demanding our respect or even dependence. Tod highlights the aesthetic characteristics of these edifices, showing how power can be conveyed through beauty and awe. Joanne Tod's works can be found in most major public institutions across Canada, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), and the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal.
