Inspiration for my work comes from internalised imagery absorbed throughout her childhood in Northumberland and the North East of England. Images of declining industry, the closing of coal mines, abandoned shipyards and other associated heavy industries loomed large across the landscape.The atmosphere of loss, sadness was as palpable as the smell of smoke, tar and coke from the power stations. Philippas work consists of remembered imagery of past landscapes combined with the pastoral landscape in which she lives. The muted palette references the industrial while suggested imagery reflects the rural. Work produced references both worlds combining two genres, marrying post contemporary modernism with elements of classical romanticism. Two genres, two generations of artistic movements intersect with each other, creating a place where contradictions co exist. Disjunctive kinds of everything, hidden in plain sight, create a realm in which one can lose oneself. Implied abstract imagery reveals conflict between beauty and desolation ,whilst Romanticism and Modernism combine with clashing qualities of drawing and painting. Images develop through a series of intuitive acts. Repeated applications of thin films of ink and paint build depth and patina. Layers are often removed by washing and scrubbing, revealing a palimpsest of faded marks and former painterly decisions, exposing the underbelly, vulnerable and tender. She studied a BA Hons in Fine Art at Cheltenham College of Art and has recently completed an MA at Hereford College of Art. She also holds two teaching qualifications , a PGCE for adult education and a GTP for Secondary school education. Through Philippas current and ongoing line of enquiry several connections are being explored which are both real and notional. Madhuri Bhaduri - Untitled Mixed Media on Canvas, 24 x 24 inches, 2016 Born on the 8th of June 1958, Madhuri Bhaduri has been a successful artist for the past four decades, exhibiting her works since 1986 in all major cities in India and Abroad. Madhuri has obtained her Master of Art and Painting from S.N.D.T women’s University, Mumbai. Madhuri’s art works have gradually veered from the figurative to the abstractionist mode. As her inner being matured so did the way she expressed her thought process and feeling on canvas. Each new series exploring the various planes of emotional experiences in a dialogue of brush and paint that is warm, vivid, sensual and completely resounding with the message of her inner spirit where there is spontaneity, hope, joy and fulfillment. In 2002 this multi-dimensional artist took to sculpting and creating “assemblages” using metal scraps, in an endeavor to understand and realize more completely what form and shape are all about, savoring the possibilities of the expression as sculpture. Madhuri Bhaduri’s art works have featured in thirty-eight solo shows and more than seventy-six group shows in India and abroad. She has received several prestigious awards during her art journey including the latest being felicitated by the Women’s Economic Forum (WEF) at The Hague, Netherlands for “Exceptional Woman of Excellence” in Art (2018) and lead three panel discussions on empowering leadership and inspiring influence on women empowerment on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Forgive Us Our Sins, Sacre-Coeur (Sacred-Heart in English) depicts a high fashion model on the Paris runway. St. Genevieve, patron saint of Paris, is scrawled on the canvas, graffiti style. Created in three vertical panels that reference the classic style of altar pieces, it is elevated by the lower panel. The prettiness of the model is in contrast to the grittiness of spray paint that is superimposed on the work. This lower panel has been treated with a high gloss resin, in contrast to the matte finish of the rest of the work. Scrawled in the lower left portion of the painting, the text reads Pardonne nos péchés, or forgive us our sins. This monumental work is rendered in realism, but ultimately expressed as a defaced modern commodity.
