About the Item
Belgium, 1805 – 1860
Victor-Jules Génissson was born in Sint-Omer (Belgium) on February 24, 1805.
He was the son of Jules and Julie Paulmier. And married Reine Marie Van Bree in 1835.
They had a son, Georges (1835-1896), who would become a genre and landscape painter.
Victor-Jules Génisson trained at the Antwerp academy. Important teachers for him were Mathieu Van Bree and Philippe Van Bree, two painters of history scenes in romantic style.
After his studies, he undertook study trips to France, Italy, Germany and Great Britain.
Victor Génisson was skilled as a portrait and history painter, but he achieved most fame as a painter of cityscapes and church interiors.
These accurately painted church interiors were either historically conceived or decorated with contemporary characters. This concerns the interiors of Gothic churches, which ties in with the renewed interest in the Gothic in Génissons' time.
His use of perspective is extraordinary!
In 1851 he came to live in Brussels again, finally settling permanently in Bruges in 1857.
Génisson regularly exhibited his paintings in the Triennial Salons and in smaller salons in the province, examples are:
The Hague, 1839: “In the St. Paul's Church in Antwerp”
Amsterdam, 1841: “Church interior” and “In the Sint-Gudule in Brussels”
Brussels, 1842: “View of the transept of the cathedral at Amiens” and “View of the choir stalls in the cathedral of Amiens”
Paris, 1843: “View in an aisle of the old Dominican monastery in Antwerp”

- Blue Secret, Janssart, Oil paint/canvas, Zero ArtLocated in OOSTERBEEK, NLJanssart, pseudonym Wouter W. Janssen As early as the age of six, the talented Wouter painted the blossoming blossom trees in his parents' garden. At fourteen, he painted a portrait of his teacher at school and was rewarded with a ten for ‘drawing’ on his diploma. His fascination with painting of the 15th and 16th centuries led to a nearly perfect copy of "El Greco's Madonna" at age 16. This love of artistic expression continued to grow over the years, fuelled in part by the success of his creations. At the age of eighteen, this passionate painter decided to devote his life entirely to fine art, combining his studies at art school with working in a restoration studio. Here he discovered the secrets and painting techniques of the old masters, it fuelled his interest in art history and art movements. The extraordinary thing is that so coincidentally the history of painting became synchronized with his artistic life. Wouter Janssen studied the painting technique of his favourite painter Rembrandt for more than ten 10 years. He became wanted to unravel the mystery of the master. The paints used at that time were naturally rubbed by himself to approximate a historical effect. In a subsequent episode, he immersed himself in the technique of Romanticism. His paintings, mostly landscapes, were made in the style of the Dutch Romantic School. And led to unprecedented success in America. For example, with one-man exhibitions on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. After watching a documentary on the life of Vincent Van Gogh, Wouter Janssen wondered what it would be like to paint in an impressionist style. It came naturally, after consuming half a bottle of gin, with extraordinary results as a result. The urge to complete the historical circle was further completed by his transition to Zero Art...Category
