About the Item

A rare and most attractive still life by William Smith of Chichester. The sumptuous textures of the peaches and grapes contrasting with the dark background. A really handsome 18th Century piece that would add grace and elegance to any dining room, drawing room or study. William Smith of Chichester (1707-1764) A still life of grapes, peaches and plums on a marble ledge Oil on canvas 14 x 12 inches without frame 21 x 18½ inches with frame William Smith was the oldest son of a Sussex cooper (barrel maker). Along with his two brothers, George and John, he became a professional painter, achieving great success in their lifetimes and subsequently becoming known as the "Smiths of Chichester". They were patronised by Charles, 2nd Duke of Richmond and Lennox (1701-1750) and between 1760 and 1763, took a number of prizes for landscape, such as the premium offered by the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. William initially took up portraiture but later turned to still life. The 2nd Duke of Richmond, impressed by his abilities, enabled William to study with a portrait painter in St Martin’s Lane, London. William remained in the capital for around five years, working in a studio in Princes Street, Leicester Fields, and was joined at some point by his younger brother George. William was subsequently invited to Gloucester, not as a portrait painter but having received a commission to paint an altarpiece for the private chapel of Sir John Guise at Elmore Court. William spent eight or nine years in Gloucester as a portrait painter before returning to London, establishing himself in a studio in Piccadilly. Here, he extended his work to include flower and fruit painting. In later years, William retired to a house at Shopwhyke, Chichester, where he died in 1764, aged 57.
