About the Item

This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. In Apples and Copper Kettle, Laura Critchlow invites us into the world of hyperrealism with an extraordinary still life composition. The artist’s meticulous attention to detail is evident in the polished copper kettle, which reflects the surrounding elements with incredible clarity. The apples, beautifully rendered with delicate textures, are placed beside the kettle in perfect harmony. Critchlow’s skillful handling of light and shadow creates a sense of depth that brings these everyday objects to life, almost inviting the viewer to touch them. Using acrylic on board, Critchlow masterfully captures the subtle transitions between the rich tones of the copper kettle and the soft reds and greens of the apples. The contrasting color palette—deep, earthy reds against the reflective metallics—evokes a timeless and almost nostalgic feeling. The soft lighting enhances the realism of the work, allowing the textures of the apples' skins and the smoothness of the kettle to be the focal points of the composition. The muted dark background further intensifies the vibrant colors, pulling the viewer's attention toward the objects that seem so real they could almost jump off the surface. Critchlow's approach to hyperrealism is not just about technical precision but about finding beauty in the smallest details. Each apple, with its polished sheen and slight imperfections, is carefully considered, showcasing the artist's deep understanding of form, texture, and light. Apples and Copper Kettle captures the fleeting beauty of everyday objects with stunning clarity, making it a remarkable example of contemporary still life. As an active officer and the Society’s publicity officer, she contributes significantly to its operations. Laura has received several prestigious awards, including the Anita Emmerich Award and a Gold Bowl Honorable Mention award in 2024. She has also showcased her art at the Ruth Borchard Exhibition, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Society of British Artists, Sugarlift Gallery in New York, and the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition, among others. Her work is collected worldwide, with pieces traveling to Europe, America, Hong Kong, and Australia. “Using a limited palette, of often just four colours, I mindfully contemplate the objects and depict what is there in front of me. I aim to draw the viewer into my work, so they too can spend a moment quietly observing an object that very often would be overlooked. Each still life piece has between 20 – 30 hours spent on it – and about 30 years of practice! Even my miniature works often have a similar amount of time spent on them.I haven’t studied art at university, I’m a self-taught artist. This has allowed me to follow my own path and not be deterred away from painting what inspires me. I have been painting for over 30 years now, however will always consider myself to still be learning, which excites and drives me forward. I still make the regular pilgrimage to the London galleries to study the works by the grand masters for inspiration. I also regularly visit contemporary galleries and artists to pick their brains about techniques and inspirations.”-Laura Critchlow

Apple Cider, Original Painting

Artist Comments
Artist Dwight Smith depicts a realistic culinary-themed still life. "The bottle opener was of my dad and mom's from so long ago I don't remember when," shares Dwight. He paints a bright red apple on its side adjacent to it. A focused light source highlights the foreground, while strong contrasts of dark shadows in the background frame the elements.

About the Artist
Dwight Smith depicts commonplace objects with a sense of playfulness and humor. His watercolor still life paintings appear conventional in their soft colors and composed compositions, but upon further observation the juxtaposition of unrelated items make for delightfully surprising combinations and comparisons. This transformation of the everyday, and strong graphic style, lend the work a pop feel. However, pop art is generally cool and ironic. Instead, there is a familiar and comforting sense of kitsch and Americana in Dwight’s subjects. In a similar fashion to the work of American artist Wayne Thiebaud, Dwight paints food and sweets of the American appetite. Doughnuts, hotdogs, and lollipops are captured in all of their potent delight. He plays with scale and composition to bring out a sense of the absurd, but ultimately his goal is to make the viewer smile.
