About the Item

This masterful and detail oriented depiction of potentially three generations of what may be leather tanners and or saddle-makers in their workshop is a very American genre scene that speaks of the artisan and craftsmanship of this era. Moeller stands as technically one of the more refined detail oriented painters of the turn of the century. This is a wonderful piece for a room to bring back a nod to history, to American trade and traditions. Or for the man that enjoys that perspective in a painting. It has been framed in a very modern frame to acclimate it to a new environment more seamlessly - 23 karat silvered gold.. It is signed lower right and has N.A. after the signature which means that he was a National Academician. The canvas measure 16 x 12 inches inside our framed dimensions. And its provenance is the : D. Wigmore Gallery in NYC and it has been in a private collection in Newtown, CT. Almost no other artist rivals his ability to capture cloth and different materials along with the expressions and wrinkles of the characters that grace his canvases. His depictions such as this one always capture the figures in discourse, lively and highly engaged. He never shied away from the challenge of capturing the hands of the figures or positions where the figures are foreshortened, he embraced difficult compositions such as this one where many objects are in different ranges of shadow and light. Moeller’s body of work tends to cycle in and out of favor with collecting trends in America. In the late 1980’s through the 1990’s there was a revival where prices increased to around and above the $100,000 mark for better compositions. In the recent market his works have been out of favor. Yet there are indications that a work like this will become sought after again as America moves back to its appreciation of this era of quality and ingenuity and as a checkpoint to contract how far we have come today with automation and technology. And the appreciation of artists such as Moeller and techniques we will not see achieved again in painting. The son of a decorative painter, Moeller served for three years as an apprentice under his father. He then studied painting in New York with E.M. Ward and Will Low and worked in Munich under the tutelage of Feodor Dietz and Frank Duveneck. Strapped for resources, he returned to New York in 1883 and devoted himself to decorative painting. The year of his return, he sent A Girl in a Snow-Storm to the National Academy; the following year, his work Puzzled gained him the Hallgarten Prize and election as an associate to the National Academy. Louis Charles Moeller was one of the best known and most popular of American genre painters. His work appeared in the exhibitions of the National Academy of Design in New York City, and they were acquired by a number of the leading collectors of contemporary art of the late nineteenth century. It is an aspect of American art that has been forgotten and even eclipsed in its own time by the bright, scintillating colorism of Impressionism.

The Artist's Studio - Scottish 1914 Glasgow Boy art exh interior oil painting
By Alexander Roche
Located in Hagley, England
This superb RSA exhibited Scottish Edwardian interior oil painting is by Glasgow Boy artist Alexander Ignatius Roche. It was painted circa 1914 when Roche was living at 8 Royal Terrace, on Calton Hill, a very prestigious property in Edinburgh, now the Halcyon Hotel. The painting is a view of Roche's studio, quite possibly one of the rooms at the above address. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy the following year, no. 333 entitled The Studio. The painting shows Roche beneath the vast window in his studio against a red wall that meets pale floorboards. Various items and furniture are scattered about. The balance of the white window and pale floorboards with the red wall intersecting is perfect. A really lovely example of this great Glasgow Boy artist's work and a very personal piece showing his inner sanctum. Signed lower right. Provenance. Exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy 1915 no. 333, entitled The Studio. Condition. Oil on canvas, 24 inches by 20 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a gilt frame, 32 inches by 28 inches and in good condition. Alexander Ignatius Roche RSA NEAC RP (1861-1921) was a Scottish artist in the late 19th century and an important figure in the “Glasgow Boys. He was born in the Gallowgate in Glasgow, the son of a milliner, Alexander Roche. He attended St Mungo’s Academy in Bridgeton, Glasgow. He originally trained as an architect, but then changed to art, studying at the Glasgow School of Art and, from 1881, at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Here he studied under Gustave Boulanger and Jean-Leon Gerome. In his time here he befriended William Kennedy, John Lavery, Thomas Millie Dow and William Stott. In the early 1880s he joined a colony of Scots artists in Grez-sur-Loing south of Fontainebleau. On his return to Scotland in 1885 he joined with the Glasgow Boys working on murals for the 1888 International Exhibition. In 1888 he travelled to Capri where he befriended Fabio Fabbi and Harold Speed. In following years he visited both Venice and Florence, and married an Italian girl on the latter trip. This marriage was short-lived and they separated. As both were Catholics there seems to have never been any divorce. In 1896 he moved from Glasgow to Edinburgh and began to distance himself from the Glasgow Boys. His work drifted from largely landscape to portraits. In 1906 he remarried (possibly bigamously), to Jean Alexander, daughter of Robert Alexander. During this period they enjoyed the friendship of Joseph Crawhall...
