About the Item

Bit of Blue by Lu Haskew Oil Painting Still life of Tulips and Lilacs in a vase with two blue stripes. 26x26" image size 26x26" framed size signed lower left ABOUT THE ARTIST: Lula Mae Haskew February 7, 1921 – November 24, 2009. Born near the Potawatomi Lands of her Native American Grandmother in Oklahoma. We represented Lu in our gallery for over 17 years. All artwork listed by us is consigned directly by the artist's family estate. She was a prolific artist, and her work continues to be sought out by major fine art collectors. The still life's in particular have a timeless appeal, featuring an array of vibrant floral arrangements, fruit and collectibles. The more rare paintings feature boats at dock, painted from photos she took while visiting her sister in Oregon. A few portraits remain as well. Our goal is to have her artwork enjoyed by others as she intended. Upon retirement from a 33-year teaching career, Lu rented a studio in Loveland and began concentrating on her oil and watercolor painting. Learning from artists she had followed and admired throughout the years her painting became a full time career. She studied with renowned painters Richard Schmid, Clyde Aspevig, Joyce Pike, and others at the Scottsdale Art School and the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts. She also had a passion for floral still-life subjects and used material from her own beautifully landscaped garden to create stunning settings. Fruit and vessels compliment her many still life paintings. Lu considered it a must to work from live models once or twice a week, and she thoroughly enjoyed portrait work; and landscapes round out an extensive portfolio. Her devotion to painting kept her busy attending numerous painters’ workshops each year, she also taught painting at a community art league as well as the Loveland Academy of Fine Art. and vigorously painting in her studio at least 4 days a week, well into her late 80's. Lu’s paintings are a featured in many private and corporate collections including Albertson’s Corporation (Formerly American Stores, Inc.), Home State Bank, The Ball Jar Company, Chris & Jack Harris, Linda & Victor Lund, Don Marr, Gertrud Fischer, & Jerry Mcmorris. ARTIST'S STATEMENT: "Life is good to me. Being able to go to my studio five days weekly and paint for several hours, living in a supportive community, having family and friends who encourage me--all have contributed to helping me become an artist. Being fortunate to study with some of the artists I admire has kept me painting from the garden, people and my favorite things. With the support of galleries, teaching and doing demos, how could I do anything else? My goal is to try to be the best I can be by always being a student, looking for new ideas and stretching my horizons."

  • My Roses with Peaches
    By Teresa Vito
    Located in Loveland, CO
My Roses with Peaches by Teresa Vito 20x16" oil Floral Still Life Bouquet of Roses surrounded by a table full of peaches Signed lower right ABOUT THE ARTIST: Teresa Vito's paintings reflect the beauty she sees all around her. She loves painting living energy, whether it is the outdoor landscape, berries and flowers picked for a still life, or the unending variety of the human face. Vito has been a full time oil painter since 1992. She currently lives in Pueblo, Colorado. Vito has won numerous national and regional awards including an Award of Excellence, Best Portrait and Best Still Life Awards from Oil Painters of America. She also received the Best of Show award from the Artists of Colorado Exhibition held at the Colorado History Museum. Teresa Vito grew up in a one store town in upstate New York. She had never met an artist or had gone to an art gallery until she went to college. She chose to major in art because she loved to draw. College offered no clue as to how to become an artist so she decided to try to figure it out on her own. With $250 and a train ticket to Denver (she had never been west of Ohio) carrying a suitcase, a purse and a portfolio of nude drawings, Vito began her artistic journey. During her twenties she did every job she could find that was art related. Vito worked in a frame shop and gallery, at art supply stores, made posters and newspaper advertisements and created display windows in downtown Denver. The year the Art Students League in Denver opened, she maneuvered a job there running a small art supply store. It was here she found out about the world of Artist's Workshops. Vito learned as much as she could looking through the door of the many classes taught by master artists, who were in fact making a living with their art. With this inspiration Vito saved up enough money in 1992 to live cheaply for a year and become a full time artist. She has never looked back and strives to continue to be the best possible painter she can be. She now teaches workshops with gratitude and generosity, to share in all that she has learned. Vito has a BA in Fine Art from the State University of New York at Geneseo and has taught and studied at the Art Students League at Denver and the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts. She has expanded her knowledge by taking numerous workshops over the years with artists Quang Ho, Ramon Kelley...
