Mireïo
'Tulipes, Mandoline et Echiquier', French Synthetic Late Cubist Gouache on Paper

1993

About the Item

Synthetic, Late Cubist gouache of a mandolin, tulips and a chess board by French artist Mireïo. Signed and dated '93 top right and signed and titled 'Tulipes, Mandoline et échiquier' to the back of the paper. Presented in a plain black frame. This particular work of art is very much in the style and highly reminiscent of works by Picasso during the 1920s, his Synthetic or Late Cubist period. It is a bold and captivating gouache, painted with great energy. Mireïo is a full member Honoris Causa of the European Academy of Fine Arts and can be found in the current edition of BENEZIT ( a catalogue of the works of artists ). Born in 1947 in Sarlat (24 - Dordogne, Périgord, France), her atypical career began with a true vocation: As early as 1959, it was her drawing teacher – Marcel DEVIERS – who gave her a passion for the arts and painting. In 1968, Mireïo won the Académie du Périgord prize (Sylvain FLOIRAT prize) for the quality of her painting. In addition to painting, Mireïo creates large ceramic panels, many of them in enamelled bas relief, inspired by the medieval city where she lives. In 1978, she participated in the Salon Prestige des Indépendants (100 selected artists) She was praised for the energy and scale of her work. It was in 1979 during her first trip to Morocco that Mireïo became captivated by the kaleidoscope of bright colors in perpetual motion: this became a decisive moment in the evolution of her painting: inspiring large and fast strokes, released with fervor. The same year, she was promoted to Full Member Honoris Causa of the European Academy of Fine Arts. Awards flowed in and exhibitions followed one after another (France…Galerie Drouant Paris…New York at the Coliseum in 1980…) In 2004 she held a Great Summer Retrospective at the Old Bishopric of Sarlat to celebrate her 40 years of painting and creating (watercolours, gouaches, oils, ceramic panels); the over 90 exhibited works tracing her life in art: the Ile de Ré, Sarlat and Périgord, Morocco, the Marines, Paris, animated objects, Provence, cats, the Arcachon basin... Art to tame chance and bring out the light. Sensual, disturbing to the point of provocation, she is inhabited by a passion, by a creative fire that she masters through the beauty of secret geometries and calligraphy references. During her very first trip to Senegal in 2007, in an inner quest for the Void of Silence and Transparency, she found herself entranced by the dazzling effect of the sun's rays on the ocean which seemed to open up great holes of white in the waves. Taken by a frenzy of painting, she has since continued to magnify these disturbing "White Holes" on the canvas. Pablo PICASSO: Mandolin and Guitar is one within a series of nine vibrantly coloured still lifes painted from 1924–25; each executed in a bold Synthetic Cubist style of overlapping and contiguous forms. Through the rounded, organic shapes paired with deep, saturated hues, Picasso successfully conveys his admiration and appreciation of contemporary developments in Surrealist painting; developments that heavily influenced him.
