The artwork presents a minimalist view of the Stahl House, also known as Case Study House No. 22. It emphasizes the iconic cantilevered wing overlooking Los Angeles and its large swimming pool. The 1950 Case Study Homes were an experimental design project utilizing the new materials and construction technologies developed during World War II. These homes are the foundation of what we now call mid-century modern architecture.
About the Artist
Artist Mitchell Freifeld depicts architecture that evokes memory and nostalgia. Using a modernist approach, he highlights details that often fade into the background of familiarity. With his camera, he meticulously documents the world around him, using his shots as a reference for his art. "My works are the product of a process that is more intuitive than intellectual and a passion for simple, modern architecture and light," says Mitchell. After winning his first juried show at 10, Mitchell's lifelong dream of becoming a full-time artist took root. A pivotal moment in 2001 prompted him to seize the chance and devote himself to art-making. Now, he dedicates most of his time to a compact studio within his garage in Portland, Oregon. Mitchell's life revolves entirely around his creative pursuits, taking pictures, and working seven days a week with paints and brushes.

Inspired by a photograph, artist Hadley Northrop beautifully captures the enduring charm of a little street that remains unchanged over the years. "There is something irresistible about lit-up windows at night," shares Hadley. Set against the cobalt blue sky, the lights ranging from cream to persimmon cast a warm and inviting glow to the scene. "I used to live in England and loved the ordinary old buildings."

Her glowing depictions of light sources are reminiscent of a blurred photograph or a bleary-eyed nighttime stroll. Hadley developed her love for art from her mother, a watercolorist, and continued to pursue her artistic career at a collegiate level and beyond. She now works out of a small studio in San Francisco’s Mission District. Hadley goes into her studio seven days a week with her Boston terrier puppy.

This painting is of a double redwood tree in a small town on the California Delta. I love this Victorian street at night and its combination of giant ancient trees and whimsical decorative lights.
