Untitled (Still Life with Plants) is an abstract still life gouache painting of potted plants with a glass bowl with orange, green, and yellow by 20th Century artist, Myrtle Hoffman Campbell. Presented in a custom frame, outer dimensions measure 38 x 32 ⅜ x 1 ⅜ inches. Image sight size is 26 x 20 ½ inches. About the Artist: Myrtle Mae Hoffman Campbell, born and raised in Columbus, Nebraska, was known for high-color, stylized paintings of still life, Colorado mountain mining towns, and other mountain scenes. Although most of her years as an art professional were spent elsewhere, she maintained ties to Nebraska including exhibitions from 1939 to 1943 at Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha. She was the oldest of three children, and her parents were Mary R. Mooney Hoffman and John Edward Hoffman. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1903, and shortly after moved with her family to Sparta, Wisconsin, where her father joined a brother in the meat market business. In 1910, as a student of John Vanderpoel, she earned a degree from the teacher training division of the Art Institute of Chicago. Then as Art Supervisor of Schools, she lived in Escanaba, Michigan until 1915, when she married Walter Campbell in Sparta. The couple lived in Decatur, Illinois, from 1915 to 1918; Pratt, Kansas, where she taught art in the junior-senior high school to 1923; and then settled permanently in Boulder, Colorado, where William Campbell was a University professor, and where she taught art at the University in the summers of 1935 to 1937. She was also a co-founder of the Boulder Artists Guild. With this move, Myrtle gave art lessons and focused on becoming a serious fine art painter. Her method was to travel for quick sketching and then finish with paintings in her studio. In addition to Colorado, she traveled to Arizona, Wyoming, California and New Mexico.
