Pittore Toscano da Rutilio Manetti Mosè e Aronne Inizio Sec. XIX Olio su tela, cm 77x56; con cornice cm 99x77 Il dipinto raffigura Mosè e Aronne che studiano le sacre Scritture. Come conosciamo dalla lettura dell'Antico Testamento, Aronne era il fratello maggiore di tre anni di Mosé e fu il primo sommo sacerdote della tribù di Levi. Quando Mosè ricevette da Dio l'incarico di parlare con il faraone, fu il colto Aronne a sostituirlo data la sua balbuzie. Nel nostro dipinto è proprio Aronne infatti che insegna a Mosè alcuni precetti dei testi sacri utilizzando il grande volume aperto sul tavolo. Mosè è ben riconoscibile grazie alle tavole della Legge alle sue spalle e alle corna sul capo, queste ultime divenute per errore attributo del patriarca del popolo di Israele a causa di un errore di traduzione. Nell'Esodo 34,29 si racconta infatti che Mosè, scendendo dal monte Sinai, aveva sulla testa due raggi (in ebraico karan), parola confusa con il greco keren, ovvero corna. Il nostro dipinto è una copia databile al primo Ottocento di una celebre opera conservata nella collezione Corsini di Firenze, attribuita da Roberto Longhi a Rutilio Manetti (Siena 1571 - 1639). Questi è stato uno dei principali pittori senesi attivi tra la fine del Cinquecento e l'inizio del Seicento, che a partire dal secondo decennio estese il suo raggio d'azione in altre città toscane come Pisa (dal 1612) e Firenze (dal 1621). Il dipinto Corsini, modello dell'opera che qui si commenta, è databile all'ultima fase dell'attività di Manetti, successivo cioè alla sua svolta caravaggesca avvenuta a partire dalla metà del secondo decennio del Seicento. Nel processo di trasformazione in senso naturalistico del suo stile giovanile influenzato da Federico Barocci e dai barocceschi senesi, Manetti guardò non solo al magistero di Caravaggio, ma anche all'interpretazione che del grande maestro lombardo avevano dato alcuni suoi stretti seguaci quali Orazio e Artemisia Gentileschi, Bartolomeo Manfredi e Cecco del Caravaggio.
