About the Item
Painted with gilt wood frame, 58 x 75 cm.
is the work of the painter couple Viviano Codazzi (Valsassina 1603-Rome 1670), who specialized as a quadraturist and landscape painter, and Domenico Gargiulo known as Micco Spadaro (Naples 1609-1675), who specialized in figurative painting.
The subject depicts the episode of the paralytic healed by Christ, which in John's Gospel (Jn. 5:1-18) is set near the Pool of Bethesda known as the Pool Probatica.
Although it is a small canvas, its high quality of execution and attention to the rendering of some details (note the clothes resting on the left, the headdresses, the presence of a dog) highlight its character as an accomplished work intended for the market, probably one of the earliest
Probatic pools of private commission by Viviano Codazzi, after he had completed the one on the monumental counter façade in the Church of SS. Apostles in Naples, together with Giovanni Lanfranco, in 1638. The work is therefore datable, including stylistic comparisons, to 1640-1645
