About the Item

Sonoma Kitchen Table - after Henri Matisse - Still Life with Geranium An exceptional painting of Still Life with Geranium styled after and Henri Matisse by Bay area and Sonoma artist William Lionel Sheets (American, 1937-2022). In exceptional condition and a real value in the artists modern take on Impressionism in California art. Signed lower right "Wm Sheets 70" Image 30"H x 28"W Framed, 33"H x31"W x 2"D William Lionel Sheets lived in St. Louis, where Bill was a commercial artist. (He also painted a mural in an East St. Louis jazz club.) He read about both the art and the jazz scenes in San Francisco took a "drive-away" to arrive in SF in time for him to enroll at the San Francisco Art Institute in January 1960. He attended the University of Arkansas on a basketball scholarship. He left after a year and then attended Oklahoma State University for a semester and Kansas University for a year (here he received a "Best Design Student" award). He only attended SFAI one semester and entered military service. He returned to the San Francisco Art Institute where he studied painting under Richard Diebenkorn, Frank Lobdell and Jack Jefferson. To put himself through art school, he worked as a night orderly at St. Joseph's Hospital. He received his BFA summa cum laude from SFAI in January 1964 and then attended the school's MFA program graduating in January 1966. Upon his graduation, he was asked to teach painting and drawing at the school. In June 1964, in a Muir Woods ceremony, he married Solace Wales, whom he met at the SFAI. In 1967, the couple left San Francisco to live in Italy. He painted that year in the countryside near Siena. He learned to make reed pens from Van Gogh's letters and did pen and ink drawings with them. That year's experience of working directly from nature transformed his painting style. When he returned to the Bay Area, the San Francisco Art Institute bought one of his large paintings done in Siena as their "Annual Purchase Award." In 1968, Bill and Solace rented a 100 year old farm house high up on Sonoma Mountain where he painted. He also taught painting at Sonoma State University and at Santa Rosa Junior College. Later he returned to Italy and settled this time in Barga, located in a mountainous northern corner of Tuscany in the foothills of the Apennines.
