Jan Skramlik (1860-1936), Negotiating the dowry, oil on canvas, 1886, signed and dated, c. 282 x 178 cm, with frame approx. 292x194 cm. This is a beautiful example by Jan, its sheer proportions show off his artistic nature. The Czech artist Jan Skramlik studied at the Prague and Munich academies with Wilhelm Lindenschmidt, among others, before returning to the Czech Republic. He was also an opera singer and a member of the National Theater ensemble. His paintings often describe historical genre scenes of courtly life. Works by Skramlik can be found in the National Gallery in Prague, among others. PROVENANCE: Prominent private collection/Mansion Schleswig-Holstein. Private Collection: 2022.
