About the Item

Measures Paintings 11.75 x 6 inches sight Framed 19.75 x 14 inches Joan Arend Kickbush (1926–2006) was an American artist known for her watercolor paintings that vividly captured scenes of Alaska and its Indigenous cultures. Joan Arend Kickbush (1926–2006) was a renowned American artist celebrated for her evocative paintings depicting Alaska Native children, Yupik villagers, and Arctic wildlife. Born on March 23, 1926, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Kickbush developed an early passion for art, reportedly finding joy in drawing from a young age. She pursued formal art education at Milwaukee State College and the Layton School of Art at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. In 1953, she and her husband, Roland Gene Kickbush, relocated to Anchorage, Alaska, where she worked as a kindergarten teacher and continued to develop her artistic career. Her experiences in Alaska deeply influenced her work, leading her to capture the essence of indigenous cultures and the natural beauty of the Arctic. She worked primarily in watercolor and oil mediums, creating images that resonated with both local communities and a broader audience. Her paintings have been exhibited in various galleries and are held in collections worldwide, reflecting her significant impact on Alaskan art. In addition to painting, Kickbush authored and illustrated several children's books, further showcasing her dedication to sharing Alaskan culture and stories. Her legacy continues to influence artists and admirers of Alaskan heritage. Joan Arend Kickbush passed away on June 16, 2006, in Delafield, Wisconsin, but her art continues to be celebrated for its heartfelt portrayal of Alaskan life and culture. Her work was widely appreciated and collected, particularly for its cultural authenticity and endearing depictions of Alaskan heritage. These two paintings reflect Kickbush's characteristic style, featuring children dressed in traditional Inuit clothing with detailed fur-lined parkas and mukluks. The bright colors and expressive faces convey a sense of warmth and joy, which are hallmarks of her work. These two works are matted and framed and in excellent condition. Frames have scratches and mars.
