About the Item
Modernist painter, curator, and collector John Graham is recognized for his relationship to the New York School and as a mentor of Abstract Expressionist artists. Born Ivan Dombrowsky to an aristocratic family in Kyiv, he fled the Bolshevik Revolution and arrived in New York in 1920. Then in his thirties, Graham began studying painting at the Art Students League of New York with peers like Alexander Calder, Adolph Gottlieb, and David Smith. Graham’s book System and Dialectics of Art (1937) attracted the attention of artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, and he also curated exhibitions of the young Ab-Ex artists’ work. Graham’s paintings are held in collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Phillips Collection, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Graham’s mixed-media portrait Woman with Dodecahedron (1959) sold at auction for $1.6 million in 2007.
